Count Madonna among the many people outraged over Russian punk band Pussy Riot's conviction on hooliganism charges. After three members of the feminist group were sentenced to two years in prison last Friday for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian cathedral protesting Russian President Vladimir Putin, Madonna issued a statement slamming the conviction, according to The Huffington Post.

Madonna

"I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40 second performance extolling their political opinions. Even if one disagrees with the location or how they chose to express themselves, the sentence is too harsh and in fact is inhumane. I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty. They've spent enough time in jail. I call on ALL of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free."

Meanwhile, Russian police are searching for more members of Pussy Riot, a police spokeswoman said, according to The Guardian. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, have already been in jail for five months. Will you join Madonna in supporting Pussy Riot?

First, whom are we who are not Russian to dictate that the Russian Laws are unjust. Just how many of our US laws are seen as being unjust in the eyes of other countries. We as Americans hate when other countries step on our feet over our laws, yet here we are asking to step on the feet of another country.

Actually they are a mess, but I was just making a point about inalienable rights versus a cultural idiosyncrasy.

We, in the US, take our freedoms for granted - Here these women would have been cited for trespass if the Church actually pushed it (and we have all kinds of proof that they do not - San Fran where the drag queens burst in and paraded around during a service - I don't think the Church even brought charges but did push the out the door at some point)

Russia seems fine to have an opinion as long as one keeps it to oneself

Jackie, Excuse me - we have more freedom's than Russia? There are many whom would disagree! Me right here, yes, count me! Pussy Riot didn't just drag a church; they broke into a major, government event and pissed people off, big time! Disrespect is not harmless entertainment; It's disrespectful. How would we know about respect? Who in this country knows anything about respect? From the top down!

Well then the many are wrong or just stupid!

It's Russia, they have their own rules and have nothing to do with us. This whole thing has nothing to do with USA.

Example - perhaps, if one is stupid and dances in a church they were not invited into and screams inane political songs; one may end up in jail. yes, a lesson in there somewhere

Well said. It is a different culture and Americans are too quick to criticize anything another culture does and conveniently turn a blind eye to themselves.

Well, I was responding to Jessie M.'s post, nothing you posted. But that's all it boils down to - differences in culture. Just because one set of people views the world one way doesn't mean it's going to be the same in another. Often this does include human rights issues.

It's my belief that pushing american ideals on the rest of the world is a mistake - regardless of whether or not I agree with the way another country or culture does things.

I think the only time other countries should really be getting involved is when genocide or other truly inhuman acts are involved. Just my opinion.

We are evil and hated the world over! We send drowns in to our neighbors neighborhoods and kill innocent families siting to dinner, and call it good. Ugh! We instigate wars on foreign soil, killing innocent families and call it good. Ugh! Define freedom? Define respect? Define decency? Define murderers? Define Armageddon? Thank You!

*Facepalm* It has to do with INJUSTICE. Which is what this is. Maybe try widening your vision a little.

And you friend, need a reality check. It is Russia and they objected and these loons are in jail - they are not dead -- and it is not injustice by any stretch of the imagination. These women intruded into a church - in this country it would be illegal too, trespassing and performing without a license but would be a much lighter offense. Even here, people do not have the right to do what ever they want where ever they want. That is reality.

I honestly have no words to describe how moronic that sounded.
Oh and, last time I checked, it was almost impossible to trespass on a Church.

"Just how many of our US laws are seen as being unjust in the eyes of other countries."

The only thing that's "unjust" in the American justice system, is allowing the psychos who murder multiple people in cold blood to escape the ultimate form of punishment, on the premise of insanity, or some other legal technicality or law.

I'll assume that's tongue in cheek, because that would be a hell of a precedent. Just imagine how many americans would be imprisoned in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Serbia, Libya, Kenya, North Korea, etc, etc.
