Let her compete in a pink tutu if she wants. What matters is if she can fight.

If it is OK with the Olympic Committee, then there shouldn't be a problem. She may, however, revise her decision after competing with it on...some things take awhile to change.

I find the female muslim garb completely wrong and anacrhonistic, but if she willingly wants to put it on (yeah...), I'm not going to advocate forcing it off of her...UNLESS, it messes with the sport. Is there an (dis)advantage?

I hope it gets pulled down in her eyes by an Israeli Jew and she gets her ass handed to her . Bigtime! And she needs to shave that hairy upper lip, what a nasty looking wildebeest of a specimen. I bet she has a big stinky disgusting jungle growing down in her underwear too.

If it's for legitimate religious reasons I don't see why she shouldn't be allowed to wear it. It'd be kinda dickish and discriminatory if she wasn't.

If they don't want to participate in appropriate dress for the sport, let them go home. Those who think it's the right thing to do don't realize that they are falling into the trap being set by the sharialists.

I get why they did it, because it would be an insult to her religion, but I want to know what she has to say about it. I don't want to know about what her father says, or the religious leaders of her country have to say about it. I was under the impression that she was fine competing without it.

As it should be. The world is made of different people. The skill should prevail. They said the same about Flo Jo and her nails and hair, before she wiped the floor with everything moving -- granted I know the issues that came later, but it wasn't about her hair and nails.

It's worn for religious reasons as opposed to vanity. Besides, I think we should be impressed that Saudi Arabia actually let women compete.

When you join a competition, you agree to abide by their rules. You do not join, AND then ask them to change their rules to accommodate you.

Hypocrisy 1: When our women go to muslim countries they have to wear headscarfs. Why aren't muslim women held to that same standard.

Hypocrisy 2: If she thought it would effect ability to compete it would be gone. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure there are muslim women competing in other events where the headscarf puts them at disadvantage and so they do not wear.

I know it really does not matter, but I voted "wrong" because I am tired of the double standards. The 2020 Olympics might be held in a Muslim Country (Turkey) remember this story then, when european, american, and asian women are "asked" to wear headscarfs.
  • Ben Ted 2012/08/03 13:53:34

"When our women go to muslim countries they have to wear headscarfs. Why aren't muslim women held to that same standard"

That's why we are able to hold our countries up to a higher standard than traditionalist muslim countries. If we start imposing the rules that they impose, we become like those traditionalist countries and civilization takes a big step backwards.

You know, I see you point.
If my wife came home and found our dog peeing on the sofa she would be upset. But if she came home and found me peeing on the sofa, she would be VERY upset.

All I ask is that you remember this conversation in 2020 if Istanbul hosts the Olympics.

The world is made up of many people with a vast diversity of beliefs and cultures, but what it all comes down to is that if we want to be respected,we have to have respect for others,a-z.

Wow... you really believe that, don't you? Do they respect OUR culture, or do they expect us to conform or die?

I guess when a terrorist kills a bunch of people he first makes sure all his victims have no respect for his culture. He must give the more "open-minded" people a chance to get away. His bombs are for bigots only.

I guess all the victims in Colorado must have disrespected James Holmes at some point.

All the changes in the world start with baby steps and if we are to reach a better understanding we must keep an open mind,a test of the strength our convictions. My answer was specificly directed at the question posed, not to make rash generalizations and association to this horrible tragedy, because that is too easy,a route taken by the uneducated in the school of life
  • Ted Dave1969 2012/08/03 19:33:52
    Ted
So... Implying that I am uneducated. Would that be the respect for others you mentioned?

When I look out at the world I see a western culture (the very culture responsible for most progress in the world) that refuses to assert itself and a Muslim culture that refuses not to. How do you see that ending?

I don't think the Judo Dress Code calls for a head scarf, international competition should abide by the norm, but if the girl wants to wear a scarf, and there's no benefit derived, (a full body cavity search performed prior to the event), then why not?! Full Body Cavity Search beavis and butthead do america
  • Ben wes 2012/08/03 13:54:42

Religious beliefs trump anything; that's a basic right that we fight for and I respect the Saudi Arabian female for standing up to those who thought differently. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and we didn't have to have another international blow-up at the Olympics. More and more, my decision to no longer follow the games makes sense to me. Politics, money, whatever always gets in the way of late. Let the atheletes be; stop commercializing the games and maybe we'll see the games as they were intended; pure sport and competition with pride in one's nation.

The IOC has issued an official Olympic yarmulke (skullcap ) to accommodate Orthodox Jewish athletes as part of their uniforms. Tit for tat? The original Greek games were conducted with the athletes on the nude so that women could not possibly participate.

What's the big deal? Lots of people wear stuff on their head. It would be more exciting if she wore only the scarf. Nothing else.
