Kanye West and
Jay-Z have only been working on "
Watch the Throne" since November, but it quickly became one of the most anticipated albums of the year, right up there with Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and Dr. Dre's "Detox."
Now that the album is finally out responses from fans have been enormously positive -- no surprise there -- and to carry the album in the media, 'Ye and Jay have released the album's third single, "Lift Off (Watch the Throne)" with Beyonce.
"Lift Off" reminds us a bit of "Power," the first single off of Kanye's 2010 release "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," with a strong focus on the song's instrumental elements and percussive beat, while relying on Beyonce's voice for the feminine pop aesthetic that's been dominating radio play all year with artists like
Rihanna and Adele.
The lyrics are pretty thin for a hip hop release is exactly what you'd expect from two of rap's most ambitious artists. Gradiose statements like "Earth is boring" and "We gon' take it to the moon" make their message abundantly clear: It's their time to serve as music royalty.
Critics haven't had a chance to respond the album yet since it was only released on iTunes this Monday, but reviews of "Lift Off" have been supportive, if unethusiastic.
There's no question, Jay-Z and Kanye are at the top of their game, and "Watch the Throne" will probably make a killing -- but they've been at the top of their game for years. What exactly are they trying to prove?
At this point, claiming "the throne" sounds more like a desperate plea for re-election.
