Gary Clark Jr. isn't a household name yet, but the 28-year-old Austin guitarist has accumulated enough critical acclaim to be named Rolling Stone's "Best Young Gun" in 2011. On his newest single, "Bright Lights," the musician chants, "You gonna know my name by the end of the night," and when he performed the song at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2010, it was true for that crowd. Now it's true for the 500,000 people who have viewed the music video.

Gary Clark Jr. has shared the stage with legendary artists like Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, ZZ Top, and John Mayer. He was also a hugely popular act at both the South by Southwest and Coachella Valley music festivals. Like Jimi Hendrix, who's one of his inspirations, he's making a name for himself at the biggest music gatherings in the country. Do you think he's got what it takes to make it?

    Oh look, a black guitarist.

Let's compare him to Hendrix! That will sound hip and informed.

That's as stupid as comparing robert griffin III to Micheal Vick and Cam Newton exclusively.

No, nobody compares, but this guy is good, ...though Martin Luther McCoy & Lenny Kravitz do a better job imo

This thread shows that black guitarists have it hard. This attitude has destroyed some great careers because the music industry lumps them into a Jimi Hendrix clone and they're done. Eddie Hazel said they tried to do that to him. Then there's Ernie Isley, Ronny Drayton, Michael Hampton, Jean Paul-Bourelly,

I don't think so. Sorry. Hendrix (whom I saw 6 times) would transfix the audience with some tasty licks. However, Gary Clark, Jr. makes me **yawn**.

Gary Clark does not twist my head around. Hendrix twisted my head like the Exorcist.

Hendrix is the inventor.. there can never be a new inventor, but you know what, this guy is actually pretty awesome! I'm glad to see that good, guitar-based rock is still exists.

Only Hendrix is Hendrix. He invented the sound, the style, the groove.

But this cat is good. I think he's a modern day Gary Clark Jr!

Why the comparison, because he's Black? He's extremely talented and I'm sure he'd rather be The Gary Clark Jr. than the modern day Jimi Hendrix. Whenever a Black person is into rock people get so wierd and awkward about it and almost always bring up Jimi Hendrix, I bet that turns off alot of Black people with potential for great talent because of this strange idea that rock is "White music". That's sad.

Why do people always have to compare to the older generation? Jimi Hendrix is Jimi Hendreix, Gary Clark is Gary Clark. Thats it and thats all.

Why because he is black?? That is a really stupid question! One; there was one Hendrix; there will not be another. Two, you only bring up Hendrix because they were both black. Stupid.

Not even close. The only one that really sounded like Jimi Hendrix was Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Nope he will be the modern day Gary Clark Jr. and he's quite good and really that's all he has to be is himself nobody else will ever sound like Jimi. Even those who purposely try and mimic his total sound even going to the extent of buying the same vintage gear he used back in the day don't sound like Jimi. This music mimic label mentality defeats the purpose of what people start playing for in the first place their own sound you want to hear Hendrix plug a nickel in the box and listen. Besides Jimi had to learn it from those who came before and cut the trail the T-Bones Walkers, Albert, Freddy, BB Kings, Hubert Sumlin and the list goes on he listened and came up with his own unique sound.

Exactly, Jimi was an original, a true innovater, but most if all he was his own man. Mr Clark is good but comparisons are odious. Don't label him the new Jimi, let him develop his own unique sound.
