Less Than Half of This Summer's Movies Have Been 'Original' Story Ideas: Is Hollywood Getting Lazy?

"The Dark Knight Rises," "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Total Recall" ... most of this summer's movies were kind of familiar, weren't they? That's because less than half of the flicks released this summer have been original story ideas, according to RottenTomatoes.com, Yahoo's The Daily Ticker reports.

the dark knight rises

"It's the studios' best interest to use an idea that people already are familiar with," RottenTomatoes.com's Matt Atchity says, according to Yahoo! "And if you go with something that is a remake or reboot…or a sequel to something that people already like, that gets name recognition out there. And it's a big step on the way to marketing your movie correctly."

Depressing as it is to feel like you are seeing the same-old movies and franchises again and again, it's a formula that works. "The Dark Knight Rises" has grossed $547.3 million so far, and "The Amazing Spider-Man" has coughed up $655 million, Yahoo! reports.

Bringing a new idea to the pubic is an expensive (and potentially) disastrous experiment, but we'd like Hollywood to keep trying. Do you think the show biz world is getting lazy?

There will be no originality, no creativity in the process of movies. All interesting ideas will be ignored. But always - do not forget this Sodaheads - always there will be the intoxication of money, constantly increasing and constantly growing less subtle. Always at every moment, there will be gratuitous romantic subplots, the sensation of your favorite book being butchered. If you want a picture of the future of film, imagine Optimus Prime peeing on someone - forever.

The best part about that was that I ripped it from 1984.

The entire entertainment industry has thrown in the towel ! Hell, in the music business, the more ORIGINAL you try to be, the worse off you are ! If you're writing an album of material, you'd better listen to the first 13 songs on the top 40 and duplicate them ! Be a rapper with ..."LIL" or "Young" in your name, or dress like a hooker on an air force base, and dance to tired old disco beats !

I've seen about every cartoon, book, comic book and TV show that ever had a rating over the past 57 years of my life, made into a modern movie. I think the last original content movie I've seen was the first Bourne Identity. (you can't count the sequals). I remember a tv show called "My Mother, The Car" that I liked when I was young. I'm wondering if that will show up as a movie in the future.

They think calling them reboots instead of remakes makes it sound better but its still just rehashing old stuff,, some films deserve a new lease of life, the Batman films for example after Schumachers woeful attempts but get the feeling its just remake anything for the $$$

Woah, is like, one of my biggest rants about the film industry. They're really runnng out of steam, I mean they only recently made and total recall is fine the way it is, only Arny could make that film awesome! But to the point, Hollywood needs to stop relying on CGI and postmodernism stuff like parody or remake and start coming up with new ideas. Everyone keeps saying 'there isn't really anything else to make a film about nowerdays', but in my opinion, there is SO much that hasn't been used, that Hollywood is afraid to use because of 'losing money'. They want to be safe so churn out the same crap as usual.

Films are no longer being treated as an art, but a 'product', like why does there need to be an ice age 4? Some may argue some films are becoming more experimental, yet I still see a lot of films there that are void of originality, though cluttered with CGI.

There's my film rant, hope you enjoyed reading it folks XD XD XD

For a long time, although this does open the debate as to what is "new." We could talk about how the Lion King was really just a re-imagining of Hamlet, so it is debatable.

Hollywood has been lazy and uncreative for a long long time. The execs are gutless and unwilling to take a chance on anything that is not tired and worn out.

Wake up public! As long as you are going to watch the garbage they churn out, they are not going to do anything new and entertaining.

Wow, like Soda Head just noticed, but at least they brought it up.

Hollywood needs to stick to more SiFi which is easier to bring about using new scripts.

There can be good acting and with serious situations off and on, even with romance, (some hot sex maybe).

In the past they (SiFi) have been all about much tech-no stuff.
Need that, for SiFi, but stay with good adult situations.
Leave Star Wars type SiFi movies for adult Trekies, and teens.

Hollywood is getting smart. They have learned they can sell the same movie twice, three times, and more to the same people. Who is the sucker?
