Less Than Half of This Summer's Movies Have Been 'Original' Story Ideas: Is Hollywood Getting Lazy?

"The Dark Knight Rises," "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Total Recall" ... most of this summer's movies were kind of familiar, weren't they? That's because less than half of the flicks released this summer have been original story ideas, according to RottenTomatoes.com, Yahoo's The Daily Ticker reports.

the dark knight rises

"It's the studios' best interest to use an idea that people already are familiar with," RottenTomatoes.com's Matt Atchity says, according to Yahoo! "And if you go with something that is a remake or reboot…or a sequel to something that people already like, that gets name recognition out there. And it's a big step on the way to marketing your movie correctly."

Depressing as it is to feel like you are seeing the same-old movies and franchises again and again, it's a formula that works. "The Dark Knight Rises" has grossed $547.3 million so far, and "The Amazing Spider-Man" has coughed up $655 million, Yahoo! reports.

Bringing a new idea to the pubic is an expensive (and potentially) disastrous experiment, but we'd like Hollywood to keep trying. Do you think the show biz world is getting lazy?

They have always been lazy and over paid, with too much time on their hands.

I voted "Yes" for lazy, but actually I'm not sure that is the right answer. I've read for years that Hollywood has become very conservative in its approach; I've also read that it was always conservative, so I don't know what to believe. I do know one thing, I have not as yet written a screenplay, but as a writer and an avid movie fan I really would like to see more original stories made into movies. The summer movies are all right, and lots of people like them. On the other hand, you hardly ever see the story and character-driven films such as those that came out in the 1940's and 1950's, and that is sad. The independent film industry has picked up the slack, but a lot of these movies are not seen by a wide group of people. Would All About Eve even be made today? Probably not. Hey Hollywood: give the screenwriters a chance. Some of us want to see original stories.

This is a profit-driven industry, like any other business, and like any other business, they're giving people whay they want. Anyone out there could call Apple lazy too since they're just making the same product with slight improvements, but nobody does en masse like the constant attacks against the unoriginality of Hollywood. Have you listened to popular music over the last 50 years?

Isn't it obvious? Most of the original stories don't come out until awards season. Summer is just for making the easy buck.

I think they are experiencing a lack of original screen plays of any substance. They should dig back in their vaults and re-evaluate the ones they have shelved! Their basic problem is lack of character and good taste. It is often years, if ever, that many good screen plays make into production due to the previously mentioned problem.

There are only a set number of story lines. All else is simply variations on those already set number of storylines.

Yes, they (Hollywood) suck rotten tomatoes through dirty cheese cloth.

Getting very cheap and trying to make money using older movies scripts which are usually about nothing.

Hollywood does what will make it money. The directors/producers don't want to take a chance on something original.

Remakes are nothing new. What is different now is that Hollywood depends so much on CGi and over the top action instead of good writing, directing and acting talen. So, the movies are formulaic, predictable and boring.

But I don't think TDKR should be used for that since it's a trilogy rather than a remake or reboot.

Every movie is a director's interpretation of a story. Some may fail to meet the viewer's expectations, but that does not mean someone didn't work hard to put it out there. The writers/directors/actors/prod...

Hollywood gives us what we demand as moviegoers. Could they invest in more original projects? Sure, but we are rewarding the serials big-time at the box office.

Writers have used the same formulas countless times. The "blockbuster" pictures are the worst because they are trying very hard to be AAA yet utilize the same humdrum storyboards and tacky writing.

The indie scene is more original, but those films rarely gain cult followings.

    Getting?

Hollywood has been sloppy/lazy .. just doing remakes ..
(and pretty poor ones in fact)
For QUITE SOME TIME ALREADY ..
    (multiple years)
What Hollywood seems to FORGET ..
is that 'Entertainment" is a luxury commodity ..
    the prices of movies ..
many (like myself) can't afford to go to the theaters anyways ..
are unwilling to WASTE our precious resources on .. well .. useless Garbage ..

Absolutely! But I would like to say that although TDKR is another Batman movie, it was the end of a trilogy that had to happen at some point. Spiderman and Total Recall, not so much.

But I don't want them to stop doing comic book movies because of it. I love comic book movies almost as much as the comic books they're based on.

TDKR and The Amazing Spider-Man, in my opinion, were not laziness. TASM could have been a bit more original, but I certainly wouldn't call it lazy. They took some effort to make the origin story different enough.
