Lance Armstrong Stripped of Titles: Will His Foundation Survive?

Cycling legend Lance Armstrong made a heartbreaking decision this past week. It's one that will be highly-debated and leave a mark on his career forever. Armstrong decided he would no longer fight the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's allegations against him, despite passing every drug test over the years. The price Armstrong pays for that decision is being stripped of his record seven Tour de France titles.

Armstrong has also been banned for life from participating in sports and events sanctioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. All the work Armstrong put in, especially with his inspirational story as a cancer survivor, is all gone . . . Or is it? Despite these devastating allegations and penalties, Armstrong has raised millions of dollars for cancer research over the years with his "Livestrong" campaign.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation has sold nearly 80 million "Livestrong" bracelets for its cause, since 2005. The charity organization has vowed to support its leader and continue its goal of helping find a cure for cancer. However, it may not be the organization's choice, but the public's--and specifically those who are willing to donate money--as to whether it survives in the aftermath of Armstrong's punishment.

It comes down to whether donors believe Armstrong is innocent or guilty, and whether or not they believe the cyclist's ability to raise awareness for a great cause is worth more than whatever negative stigma is attached to his name.

But the sad thing is, I believe there is a cure for cancer. Why put it out there? The so called research is raking in the dough.

NIKE has said they believe him and are committed to supporting his foundation. Several other sponsors are doing the same thing. I will too; I despise this accusation without a shred of hard evidence and the criminal case dismissed for lack of evidence.

The government is hell bent on destroying people like Lance anyway and it will only get worse as we inevitably move into total dictatorship with NOBama as El Presidente for life, followed off course by violent revolution and civil war, the near total destruction of the U.S at the hands of the Elitists and the enactment of the one world government of the beast.

I think it's pretty unfair. He had over 500 drug test that he passed. Another US agency just recently dropped all charges. So they had a hypothetical new test that might prove he did blood transfusion during a race, yet the have no clean samples to test against. The have several teammates they say are will to testify against Lance, but they won't name names, nor is there any assurance they'd actually testify under oath. I think it's unfair to allege guilt, without laying out any evidence, and then force the accused to react. It's bogus.

They did release two names of two people who were to testify against Lance, both disgraced riders busted for doping. Real reliable testimony there.

I'm sorry - I just don't buy it. If he was doping, how the hell could he not fail a single drugs test in all that time, especially with all the scrutiny that was focussed on him having recovered from cancer? Only now, some 7 years after his last TDF victory we are expected to believe that all that time he was taking drugs just on the say so of a number of ex-team mates? - The whole thing just reeks of sour grapes and I don't see Lance's refusal to fight the allegations as any admission of guilt whatsoever - if I was him I wouldn't want to dignify all this crap either. Anyway -how can an American organisation strip him of his Tour de France titles - isn't that a matter for the French Cycling authorities?? It's a crying shame that this has hapened but it won't affect the way that most people think of him - his achievements are beyond reproach...

How arrogant is the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to assume that their authority goes beyond the US trying to ban Lance Armstrong when in reality their really crying for relevancy. The US government the biggest attention whores on the planet.

Hopefully the good-natured foundation survives regardless of how many titles he has 'on the books'. You don't need Tour de France titles to make a difference in the world/bring a little kindness. Shame on them for stripping him of something he rightfully deserves; I don't care who you are/how you do it, 7 Tour de France's is a colossal achievement.

I would like to think most people realize he was the target of a witch hunt. No matter how many tests he passed, they refused to believe he wasn't doping. It is no surprise he finally just got tired of the one-sided bullsh*t.

Innocent until proven guilty - and he was proven innocent over and over. They have no right to do what they are doing. Hopefully people see that and his Foundation will not only survive, but thrive.

Yes it will survive and I do not think that it right to take away all of his titles that he has worked so hard for. If all of his test came back negative, then leave man alone. Hasn't he been through enough.

You realize they just don't have any evidence that he ever did anything illegal right? He passed every test they gave him. Just because someone decides it's not worth spending the rest of his life fighting charges because every time he wins a case another one attacks him, it's all bunk?

The problem is that if you don't fight the charges it gives people the perception that he is guilty. You may look on it as a witch hunt but a lot of people will consider it as an admission of guilt not to fight them.

Yes but at the same time, how long do you keep fighting against a powerful group that makes it pretty clear they will not stop until you are either bankrupt, or defeated?

There was no way they would ever stop going after him, it's pointless to keep fighting the battles when there is absolutely no way you can ever win the war.
