Lance Armstrong Cuts Ties With Livestrong: Does the Charity Need Another Celebrity Spokesperson?

Lance Armtsrong has seen better days. After being stripped of seven Tour de France titles amidst a doping scandal, he also lost his Nike sponsorship. Then, in October, he stepped down as Chairman of the Livestrong charity. He maintained his position on the organization’s Board of Directors, but now he has officially withdrawn from that post as well, severing all ties with Livestrong.

The cyclist founded the cancer foundation 15 years ago after surviving his own battle with testicular cancer. He fought hard for the non-profit and introduced the world to the little rubber wristbands that would go on to raise millions for the charity. Lance’s name brought a face to cancer for many.

Jeff Garvey, the new Livestrong chairman, released a statement saying, “Lance Armstrong was instrumental in changing the way the world views people affected by cancer.” So where does this leave the organization? Can they flourish without a familiar face to lead the way? Or does Livestrong need another celebrity spokesperson?

He created the charity and we don't know if he used performance enhancing drugs or not. He still accomplished a lot and survived cancer. Until you find someone on par, he should be the spokesperson.

To me. personally, Livestrong will forever be Lance Armstrong. What has happened to him is horrible. Now that he has cut all ties to this world, please let the man be.

If Lance Armstrong is not guilty he should continue to deny these allocations of drugs. The truth will always prevail.

If Lance Armstrong is guilty, then he needs to, at the very least, step away from the
limelight, and allow a better and more moral person to represent Livestrong, and set
a much better example for the public. Especially for the youths and young adults out
    there.

As a charity Lance would want the best face representing it possible regardless of if he set it up or not; to ensure it generates the most donations.

They had one. If they don't want Lance Armstrong any longer, perhaps they should just disolve.

No one has ever proven that Armstrong used anything, all you have is here say. If this was in court the case would be thrown out due to lack of evidence. The french have been out to get him since he started winning. Even if he did he came back from have cancer and was able to win 7 jerseys.

I'm really on the fence with this one. I know that celebrities bring attention to charities but, I also think that they also bring an agenda of their own. He's yet to be honest about his behavior. What could be a worse example to young people than dishonesty and lying.
We've already got more of that than we can handle.

It needs Lance and it should stand by him the way he stood by it. Of course they could approach Floyd Landis and the other unknown sore losers to put their money where their mouth is.

Lance Armstrong is a good man and good role model. Let him stay. We all know that he just lost his awards due to a witch hunt, so really I have no reason to think he should change. I don't endorse Europe destroying this man's reputation.

I mean, seriously, the charity is for cancer - which I am almost positive he didn't fake. His cycling and charity have no connection. This is just really sad.

First off, when he founded it 15 years ago, because of his celebrity it helped the charity to get going and become what it is today

Second, unless you find a celebrity who has survived cancer no one well fit in to take Armstrong's place and if you get one that has not survived cancer you well be taking away from the credibility of the charity

Charities need charisma at the top for fundraising. Having another celebrity survivor would be a great help.

Now that we have beaten up another sports icon we can let him go spend his money in other places. For all the good and the personal victories (winning over CANCER) he has achived, he is now a tarnished icon who we threw on the scrap heap.
Live long Lance and you still beat all the other riders, who could not accept the Winner's Jersey, (7 times) due to thier presonal revelations as well. Your are still 7 times a Champion. Thank You for all those you have helped along the way.
Now enjoy a more private life knowing we'll never again see someone accomplish this feat again, 7 TIMES, congratulations, Stay Stong.

I don't think that Livestrong needs another celebrity spokesperson - another one to fail. The Susan G. Komen Foundation did not have a celebrity spokesperson (not that I can recall) just a sister who loved her sister. He should be thankful that he did not call it the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I think he had some foresight to call it Livestrong. I think the liar, coward, and cheater is just awful. I don’t think his mother taught him to win at ALL cost. It is a sad day when we think it is okay to win this way. This whole ordeal makes me sorry for America. The tweet he sent lounging in front of the shirts was just despicable. The way he has lived his life, loved and left his wife, left Sheryl Crow, shows this is a man with no character and no morals.

Charities benefit from having a spokesperson who gets involved and has charisma but that doesn't mean he/she needs to be a 'celebrity.'

Have people get in a good position like Lance, and people will want to bring them down like a legion of devils. lance is good. He has a good spirit. So what if people did use whatever. This life is vain anyway. Why act like the religions against Jesus? It was exciting to experiences the races. Why destroy lance? Jesus in people would not go around trying to destroy people. Can you imagine a person like that in Gods kingdom? it would be maddening.

You keep repeating that he's good, has a good spirit, he was destroyed. Can you not see that he destroyed himself. He knew the rules, he broke the rules and sometimes their is a heavy price to pay for doing so. No one forced him to use 'dope'. If he didn't want to follow the rules he should have just joined a cycling club, but then he wouldn't be celebrated and worshiped. We are all flawed but we all have to follow the rules or we have arnachy.
