Lady Gaga Isn't Allowed to Perform in Indonesia: Fair or Foul?

Lady Gaga met some resistance in South Korea when religious groups protested her concert there, but Indonesia is taking it to a whole new level. According to the BBC, Indonesian police have denied Gaga a permit to perform in the country on June 3, but it's not exactly because they don't approve of her message. At least, not directly. They're doing it for her own good. The Islamic Defenders Front is threatening to intercept the diva when she gets there.

A spokesman for the Indonesian police told the BBC, "It is better that we don't give permission rather than that [the concert] ends up being stopped by the people. We have already received a letter requesting us to consider the people's plea [for cancellation]. And the Jakarta Police also refused to recommend a permit for the concert because we don't want people to clash." Did they make the right choice in denying Lady Gaga a permit to perform in Indonesia?

It's crazy. It makes me glad to live in a country that is not dictated by religion. These countries are never going to get ahead if they do not learn to separate church and state.

i get what your saying but its hard to seprate two things that you love. people love their religon and they love their country and they are 2 diffrent things but its not easy seperating 2 things in one heart. i hope u get what i mean.

But really in such countries they have often have no choice but to believe what the masses do. It's too bad the people who bought the tickets for the show had no say. Glad to live in a democracy.

all because the majority is not like lady gaga doesnt mean she is wierd. i dont like her either but the worlds not gonna listen to what i like and what i dont, they dont want me writing down their lifes. just like i dont want anyone doing that to me. its accept me but you cant change ME.

Muslim's hate Gays--actually they kill Gays and Lady Gaga is a supporter of Gay causes. They have a right to believe what they want and ban who they want. Muslim's believe Gay behavior is an abomination and evil so they can't accept someone who glorifies the Gay lifestyle it's against there beliefs

Music is music. People who make music just to be "enjoyable" aren't real artists in my opinion. If you knew anything about her you would know she is anything but an attention junkie, she does what she does because she loves her fans more than anything else. Don't believe me? Watch an interview. If that doesn't convince you, you're just being stubborn.

According to Wikipedia 87.18% of the population of Indonesia are Muslims. I believe this has a lot to do with the decision. If the majority feels that it would be offensive to their culture so be it.

Personally, I like some of her music but I still think she is a freak of sorts. But this the US.
In the US you have Freedom Of Speech. Which includes freedom of expression.
It make for some interesting fodder for the tabloids and entertaining satire. ;-)

OPINION is actually the reason. in their opinion they dont want to listen to it and if they do there will be VIOLENCE btw if they dont want to listen to her then why does she perform over there? its like giving meat to a vegeterian. why give it to them if they are not going to eat it?

I understand tht its their right as a country to ban her but I don't think they were fair in doing so. If the majority of Indonesian people don't like her, fine I understand and agree tht she shouldn't go there but honestly some people there must like her bc y else would she plan a concert there?? People who don't wanna see her perform don't have to go to her converters ya kno :p

Actually, a lot of people have bought tickets to watch her concert, only to get disappointed by the fact that she's not gonna perform. But then, it's for the sake of Lady Gaga's own safety. The Islamic Front is just way too extreme.

their govt has that capability ... note Indonesia is effectively a theocracy (ie. Islamic govt); while US citizens might disagree with Indonesia govt basis and actions, Indonesia is a soveriegn state and we are to respect their right of self govt (unless they are opponents in war)
