Lady Gaga Isn't Allowed to Perform in Indonesia: Fair or Foul?

Lady Gaga met some resistance in South Korea when religious groups protested her concert there, but Indonesia is taking it to a whole new level. According to the BBC, Indonesian police have denied Gaga a permit to perform in the country on June 3, but it's not exactly because they don't approve of her message. At least, not directly. They're doing it for her own good. The Islamic Defenders Front is threatening to intercept the diva when she gets there.

A spokesman for the Indonesian police told the BBC, "It is better that we don't give permission rather than that [the concert] ends up being stopped by the people. We have already received a letter requesting us to consider the people's plea [for cancellation]. And the Jakarta Police also refused to recommend a permit for the concert because we don't want people to clash." Did they make the right choice in denying Lady Gaga a permit to perform in Indonesia?

Even if it were for her safety still religion shouldn't be part of it. Religion is just like a hobby it's not permanent you can always change beliefs if you're not comfortable with what you get, or just don't go religious at all because you have a life. But This is what disturbs me why let her sing in stage for a world tour concert rather than allow people be? I mean us human beings have a life we shouldn't be restrictive towards what we believe in all the time there's gotta be fun and freedom besides religion itself. *My Opinion*

She is so wired and way to exposed all the time... Not a good example for the young generation... Looking at her, kardasians, the new generation is becoming more addicted to porns.

I believe that it is fair: not only are they doing it for her own safety but some of her songs such as 'Judas' could be considered offensive in a religious context. It is understandable that some people don't want her to perform, though I personally think that they should just realise that she doesn't sing 'Judas' with any intent to offend, merely to entertain. They should not take offence and just let her do whatever she wants, however some people can't keep their own beliefs to themselves and have to act in force about whatever it is they consider to be offensive.

I only checked fair because that's the way that country wants to handle it, so that's fair. I don't necessarily agree with their opinion but it's not my country and i don't have to live there. Or even visit. Fine with me. I've never seen this Gaga broad before, just read all the hoopla and see the crazy outfits she goes around in, but whoever or whatever she is, I would strongly recommend she take the hint and never try to go over there to Indonesia. Those people are nuts, you know. I doubt that Gaga's security team could protect her from the zealots.

So I really think the practice itself is foul, but since that's the way the majority of the citizenry wants it, then it is fair. Now, I don't recall reading about what percentage of the people were causing all the commotion. If it's not the majority, then I feel sorry for those folks to let a minority push them around. Kinda sounds like some of our PC areas in America, huh?

They have the largest population of Muslims in the world. Over there it's not radical it's actually just the norm. "infringing of their rights"? For starters, they don't have as many as we do and I don't think that's even a right over here. "The right to view a foreign performer at the risk of people's lives"?
Taking away their religion would be a crime. In America we have the right to practice our religion, so those of you who are insulting them and theirs based on pre-made stereotypes is ethnocentric to say the least.
    Talk about sanctimonious.

It's foul that the situation is like that, but at least they're looking to head off trouble.

The political and socioeconomic situation in Indonesia at the moment is a mess in general. We don't need it getting even worse by letting the Judean Peoples' Front kidnap Pilate's wife.

While I understand the reasoning for the Jakarta Police refusing a permit based on safety reasons due to the potential violence, it is sad they let their religious sector control.

Who do you think is going to toss one back with you and say happy birthday?

If they can't guarantee her safety, and it would endanger innocent lives, it's for the best. Although caving in to religious fanatics is a bad precedent.
