Lady Gaga is donating $1 million to the Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Yesterday, the singer posted on her blog explaining that she was pledging the money on behalf of her parents and her sister.

Gaga was born in New York, and in the blog she credits the city for her success, saying that she “would not be the woman or artist that I am today" without the city, which she said is a city of "relentless ambition." She added "Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours."

Superstorm Sandy made landfall just over a week ago, leaving millions without power and leaving 185 casualties. It caused over $52.4 billion in damages, making it the second costliest hurricane in US history. Do you think Lady Gaga is the most generous celebrity?

The most generous celebrities are the ones who do things and no one knows. A co-worker who lost her 4 year old granddaughter to cancer told me about an actor (she didn't name him) and his wife who were often in the ward, and sent the kid and her brother gifts.

There are those who get publicity for what they do, and those that don't. A publicity stunt is not generosity, it is publicity seeking. It's the quiet ones that are most generous.

I cannot say she is the MOST generous celebrity, so I chose No, but I think she is a generous celebrity. Her action turn her fans' attention to the victims of hurricane sandy and more people may donate to them. I respect her. :)

...good for her for donating a million...as compared to?.....the publicity that she seeks would cost ? otherwise....seems like she was probably told by handlers...that this is what you are going to do....

Donald Trump wanted to give $5 million to charities...but also had conditions.

Generous people typically do not go on television to tell about their generosity....

that is the job of the recipients that have permission...

and $ is not the only generous thing that people can do...

time.....resources...are other things to come to mind...

I don't know if she is the most generous. I would have to know what percentage of her incomes goes toward charity.

Also the term celebrity carries with it certain connotations that I do not think applies to Lady Gaga. As Daniel J. Boorstin observed, “The celebrity is a person who is known for his well-knownness.” Lady Gaga is no Paris Hilton.

Regardless, Lady Gaga gives back to her city when she does not have to. Her generosity deserves recognition.
