Kobe Bryant's Wife Vanessa Doesn't Want to Be Married to Someone Who Can't Win Championships: Fair or Foul?

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant have called off their divorce, but he still has his work cut out for him: "I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year," she tells New York magazine of her NBA star husband.

But Bryant certainly enjoys her lavish lifestyle. "I’m not really a handbag person anymore," she tells the magazine. “I’ve collected Birkin bags, Chanel 2.55 jumbo flap bags, and the Marc Jacobs Stephen Sprouse collection for Louis Vuitton since I was a teenager. But now, as they say, everyone and their mom is buying a Birkin or a regular size 2.55 bag in black, taupe, or beige. I’ve been sticking to a magenta suede Proenza Schouler bag."

But she says she's not as superficial as people might think. "I think people imagine that I sit at home with all the time in the world to do my hair and makeup, but that’s certainly not the case," she says. "I’m up at 6:30 in the morning with my kids. I’m taking them wherever they need to go," adding that she doesn't use a nanny. But do you think her comment about winning championships was too harsh? Or should Kobe be forever grateful that she forgave him for cheating?

You don't necessarily need to compete in a spectator sport to be qualified as "good". Some things just don't have judges. She may be an excellent cook, an awesome mother, a great partner who knows how to listen, etc..

She is most likely someone you would like to have on your team as you navigate life. Because of this, she would like to have someone on her team who is useful to help her navigate through life. I'm not saying "behind every great man is a great woman", but I am saying that the only reason Kobe (or anyone) can fly so high is because they have less to worry about. They have less to worry about because they can trust that the people they have chosen to surround themselves with are competent and can take care of business. This allows them (Kobe, or whoever) to focus on doing their part without distractions.

Failure and mediocrity are in the eye of the beholder just as beauty is. While some forms of it might be obvious, others are a matter of personal opinion. I personally value a good person more than a sports star. Getting things done and accumulating medals is not everything in this life but it is certainly best if people are compatible. You hang with people who share your values and that makes sense. It sounds to me like Kobe and his wife are actually a good match, though I cannot say either of them impress me at all.

It makes logical sense to me. If he wants to spend most of his time away from the family- he should win championships to make it worth it .She supports her husband, but not at the cost of familial relationships. At least she's honest- Kobe was not when he cheated on her with a hotel employee. He only admitted to it when the employee submitted (false?) rape allegations.

But if you marry someone for love, them winning or not winning championships shouldn't matter.

A man who does not have a strong relationship with his wife and children can jeopardize a marriage. Some people need to be able to communicate with their family in person- some women like 'family men' and she has the right to prefer this. She may still love him, but if he's constantly away from the family and she is unhappy- how can their love remain constant? Different people want and need different things. I don't see her as greedy or a 'gold-digger'(sexist term).

She didn't mind when he bought her that expensive as ring after that whole rape charge.

It may not be a popular point of view. But after everything he put her through, he better be winning championships. That man is talented but he needs to be kept on a leash.

Kept on a leash or let go. I hope the comment was taken out of context. The idea that Vanessa Bryant's esteem is dependent on his success is a bit sad.

It is sad. The fact that she has to say things like that, means he is walking on a tight rope. The time that he spends away from his family, needs to be worth it in the end.

I think why she called off the divorce was because she realized that the life style and money flow would have come to a complete stop, And rich men have have learned to stay away from gold diggers like her.

True, but imagine the money she would've gotten in the settlement. Those alimony checks would be looking pretty good. Considering everyone and their mom knows about kobe's indiscretions.

She's not the right person for him then. You're supposed to get married because you love that person for who they are not how many championships they win. I think Kobe should realize that and dump her on her butt. She obviously doesn't love him for him and therefore shouldn't be married to him.

She does love him, but if I am married to a professional athlete and they spend more time playing and training than with my family I want them to win to make the time worth it

This is so stupid only thing she cares about winning and money this is for the guys never bother dating or marry her if not someone like her because she is only after your money yep she is a gold digger no wonder no one likes her.

And no no i didn't say all hates her and if she loves him she'll stay with him no matter what win or lose it's just a tournament it's just a game and she needs to grow up and stop being so selfish and stop thinking it's only about money and if she don't then she'll lose everything thanks for letting me say what i have to say

In her situation, it's fair, these professional athletes spend more time training and practicing than being with their family so they should make the time practicing and being away from the family by winning

I understand where she is coming from, that's why I don't want to marry professional athletes or have a family with one

She knew exactly what she was getting herself into before she married him and before she decided to have kids with him. Im sure she wasn't complaining when she was buying all those expensive ass handbags and clothes!
You can't give ultimatums like that in a marriage. It's not a one on one basketball anyway! So how could Kobe alone decide whether they'll win a championship or not
You have a man that loves his career... And gets paid really well for it. Should be grateful for that. Because I heard she didn't come from much anyway
But I agree I couldn't marry someone of that stature and that is always busy with his career. Maybe she should've thought of that a LONG time ago.
