Kellie Pickler Shaves Head in Support of a Friend With Cancer: Would You Ever Shave Yours?

Kellie Pickler, who rose to fame as a contestant on “American Idol,” committed a powerful act of friendship this week. The Internet is buzzing, pun intended, with videos and photos of the country singer shaving her long blonde hair to show solidarity for a friend who is battling breast cancer.

Pickler’s bestie, 36-year-old Summer Holt Miller, was diagnosed in June and has already undergone a double mastectomy. She starts chemo on Thursday to ensure the cancer does not return. Rather than waiting for her hair to fall out from the treatments, the mother of two opted to be proactive and take matters into her own hands. “It is hair and it will grow back,” she wrote on her website CaringBridge.com. Kellie was right there by her side, and went under the shears so her friend would not be alone. Pickler tweeted, “It's been a great life-changing day.”

The friends hope the publicity will encourage women to get mammograms at a younger age rather than waiting for the recommended 40th birthday -- particularly for women like Miller with a family history of the disease. Fans knew Pickler had golden pipes, now they know her heart is golden, too. What do you think: Would you go that far for a friend?

No I would not shave my head. I would do everything else I could to support and help my friend, but shaving my head will not save her from cancer.

Honestly, I don't think I'd be able to. I would be there for them in every possible way, but I wouldn't shave my head.
Besides, I get cold really easily........

Yeah well my mum died to fast from her cancer for me to even consider this Ridiculous, Needless, Pointless support. She has been gone 34 years and I would live my life bald to have those 34 years back,It is called Take a Stand Against Cancer. In my opinion your opinion is hurtful.

I've lost people to cancer too. But, I think it's tacky to shave your head just to make a statement.

Not exactly a statement. Support is the word you are looking for. She did it in support of her friend. Nothing tacky about it.

Not a big sacrifice for me, though, I'm not far from it already.

And people with long hair can donate it to Locks of Love, a non-profit that makes wigs for people like this.

Just don't see the point to making such a rash decision. There are plenty of other ways to show support without having to shave one's head.
