We're no strangers to seeing medical procedures aired on television. We all applaud Katie Couric for getting her yearly colonoscopy televised on The Today Show. Why? Because she gets a colonoscopy in order to raise awareness about colon cancer and how to prevent it. When we first heard Tyra Banks was televising a colonic on her show, we were a little bit skeptical. But we actually learned a ton from that episode. After all, people are always talking about getting colonics, but how many of us really know much about them? Tyra totally cleared up the mystery.
But now Kathy Griffin will be showing her pap smear on television. And we think this is going one step too far and is a major call for attention. OK, fine, we get it. Pap smears are incredibly important for detecting cervical cancer and every woman should be getting one. According to Kathy's publicist, "On Friday, April 16, [Griffin] will receive this important test in
hopes that every woman will see how easy it is to get this done."
But really, is a pap smear such a mystery these days? This procedure is so mainstream and simple; most girls immediately start getting them when they turn 18. And pap smears are mandatory if you want to go on birth control. If you're a woman who isn't getting annual pap smears, is seeing Kathy Griffin get one really going to convince you to head to the doctor?
But it gets worse. Not only is Kathy Griffin getting a pap smear on television, but she also got extra fancy for the occasion. According to Kathy's publicist, "Kathy feels that this cause is so important that she has bedazzled her
[private parts] so it can be as 'va-beautiful' as it 'va-can." Umm, really, Kathy? The woman is 49 years old; why is she bedazzling her private parts to show them off on television? This is not something the general public wants to see. But on Friday afternoon, Kathy removed her purple bikini and showed off her "above the bikini-line" bedazzling.
I do think Kathy Griffin has her funny moments and I have no problem with her show, but Kathy's on-air pap smear just sounds like one loud call for attention. And an excuse to put on a bikini in public.
Will Kathy Griffin be encouraging you to get a pap smear? Or would you rather Kathy keep her bedazzled va-jay-jay off your television?

Ethan Hawke's new film has been panned by critics, but moviegoers clearly approve.
Despite the popularity and longevity of her work, none of Judy Blume's books have been successfully translated to film. Until now.
If you prefer seeing artists up close rather than on the jumbotron, you should look into attending a small music festival this summer.
It's easy to get sick of Kanye West, but at the end of the day, all that matters is his music.
Holy amazing new show, Batman! Before Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler and -- yes -- even Batman, there was the place they all grew up: Gotham.
