Kate Winslet Turns Down Autographs: Understandable or Rude?

The trials and difficulties of being a megastar never cease. According to RadarOnline, "Titanic" star Kate Winslet upset some eager fans on a flight from London to Boston last week when she promised to sign some autographs, then never did. Susan Roberts, the mother of the two teen girls who requested the autographs, was severely disappointed in Winslet's failure to appease the girls.

Roberts told the tabloid, "My two daughters asked for an autograph about half an hour into the six and a half hour flight and she told them she would come back later and visit. Well, that never happened. It was very sad that she couldn't be bothered." Of course, But not everyone believes celebrities are obligated to sign autographs at every opportunity. Especially on a six-hour flight. Do you think Winslet was being rude, or was she justified?

how much of her time and her families time should she be expected to sacrifice to take photos, chat and sign autographs?

I have seen a few of these happen, once she does it for one, another comes along, then another. on a Honolulu to LA flight that takes 5 hours, a celeb and his wife spent over half signing or taking photos. HOW RUDE for people to expect celebs to GIVE UP that much free time on a vacation.Think about every time they went in a restaurant, took a walk, walked into a store, sat on a beach, there was another person, with another camera.

No wonder they usually charter flights and stay at isolated, privately owned villas

When you think about it, it seems the Autograph thing is a bit outdated. I've run into people and have been happy to just have had a conversation with them, sometimes just getting a smile and nod from while looking their way.

In this case, she probably meant well, but after six hours of flying, her head was on other things and tired, probably. Think about it, they are trying to live and go from place to place, having to always be "on" and reciprocal to the public, or they might appear unpleasant.

Bravo. They get paid to act in a film, NOT to be available 24/7/365 to a demanding lot of people.

Getting an autograph from someone famous is a privilege, not a right. I wouldn't lose any sleep in not getting Kate Winslet's autograph.

Bohooo...stuff happens! How did the 1st encounter occur? Did this woman and her kids get pushy?

Sorry if it was not a public event and just happenstance then a person no matter how famous has a right to some space! Years ago I was seated at a table next to Arnold Palmer in a 4 star restaurant. I was appalled at how many people approached him. Poor bastard could not even eat his 4 star food while it was hot!

Maybe she was tired; she's human too. It's shame that she didn't keep her promise though, but other than that, she's not obligated to sign any autographs.

Oh I'm sorry, did you suddenly morph into Justin Bieber or Ellen Degeneres? Wait no, because even they sign autographs. It comes with being famous and your fans are the ones who helped get you there.

If I'm a star.....why would you need my autograph. Just take the damn picture and move on. Acting is a job that you get paid good to do. Just say" I love your acting and keep up the good work" and move on......

Who really cares to get someone's autograph. Why? so you can say see I met so and so.. and I have their signature to prove it.. So what.. big deal. Most people who have lives don't feel the need to get an autograph to feel special.

That's why I say, I think it's outmoded. Silly.. so, what then you would show it to everyone and they would want to touch it or something? Doing this surfaced at at time when people didn't have cameras at their disposal and before there were as many celebrities.

I shared an elevator at Disneyland with a celeb, he was pleasant, I applauded his body of work, took no photos and asked for no autograph. HE is entitled to time with his kids with NO interruptions from the rest of us.

I'm sorta in the middle. Celebrities are people too. They need their space and I can understand that. My issue is if you promised to do something, unless you have a really good reason against it, you should follow through. In the article (which is my only source) it mentioned that she promised to sign some autographs, but for a reason not stated did not follow through. I think I would need to know more on why she didn't stick around for me to make a better decision.

Or everyone wants a photo taken with you. After a Hall and Oates concert, a relative and I had hoped to get photos, after having seen them many times, waiting outside the "Artist Entrance", with others. Daryl stood there, nicely, with each group of people, allowing everyone to get a photo. It was too much. Though, I know THEY know the score, I felt kinda weird about it afterward.

Well I grew up in the 80s whe Hall and Oates were actually in their prime. Well I believe it was early to mid eighties for them but yep I went to a lot of the big hair group concerts. Funny thing most of them guys have short hair today. James Hetfield, Motley Crue, Jon Bon Jovi, Chris Cornell, David Lee Roth. They all lost twelve inches of hair. At least they still have hair. I'm losing mine. Lol.
