Kate Winslet Turns Down Autographs: Understandable or Rude?

The trials and difficulties of being a megastar never cease. According to RadarOnline, "Titanic" star Kate Winslet upset some eager fans on a flight from London to Boston last week when she promised to sign some autographs, then never did. Susan Roberts, the mother of the two teen girls who requested the autographs, was severely disappointed in Winslet's failure to appease the girls.

Roberts told the tabloid, "My two daughters asked for an autograph about half an hour into the six and a half hour flight and she told them she would come back later and visit. Well, that never happened. It was very sad that she couldn't be bothered." Of course, But not everyone believes celebrities are obligated to sign autographs at every opportunity. Especially on a six-hour flight. Do you think Winslet was being rude, or was she justified?

If she had not promised the girls it might be understandable, but as it was, I think it was rude.

Although I can appreciate someone not wanting writer's cramp from signing things for fans, and may indeed merely want to have privacy, one who is successful in film/acting is only successful if she has a fan following. Showing those fans some appreciation is not only kind, it is an expression of gratitude.

need not forget who pays the bills. I'm not saying interrupt a person when their eating at a restaurant or at the doctor or in certain circumstances where its obvious you should leave them alone but if she has time to say she would come back and she's on an airplane she had time to squiggle her john hancock on a napkin. Im not a Kate Winslet fan anyway though. I thought titanic sucked.

It's rude to ask celebrities for their autograph. Do people think they have nothing better to do than stand around as an endless queue forms wherever they go? I respect the celebrity, particularly sports celebrity, that voluntarily signs autographs, especially for kids but that's their call.

    it's part of their job........

what if someone had a heart attack on board; would you not ask if there were any doctors on board?

Why is a parent encouraging her children to bother her during her private time. The public does not own her.

I'd understand if she was busy, but she's just sitting there, can't she sign her name a few times? & what really ticks me off is she said she would come back, don't lie to get them off your backs.

Did Susan Roberts offer to pay for her time? No? Then how dare she raise her daughters to feel "entitled" to intrude on a human being's private life?

The whole autograph thing is over rated. She deserves her own space and equally we deserve not to support her career. she is nothing special and we should not teach our kids that she is.

It was rude because she promised and then failed to deliver. If she had just refused that would have been more understandable.

That is a good point about promising. She could have signed whatever for these twerps and then asked to be allowed to relax.

People get too hype over celebrities and think that celebrities are obligated. Who cares if you didn't get an autograph or if your daughters didn't? Their lives are not going to end because of it.

what i don't understand about this story is why the mother is yapping to tabloids about it - did she actually think the fact her precious daughters didnt get an autograph was somehow newsworthy??? or maybe money making???

Maybe she didn't feel good. I think it was rude of the woman to ask for an autograph on an airplane. Celebs are entitled to have their down time. My oldest son is the executive director for foundation for a famous NFL star who is recently retired. This star has won many NFL awards, been on dancing with the stars, and NFL talk shows. He also is a trusted member of the community and donates time and money to under privileged kids, sick kids, and funds reading centers to help students learn etc. BUT, that being said, he is just like everyone else when he is isn't the spotlight. My son's wedding and baby shower were at his house and he was a groomsmen in my son's wedding. BUT, nobody asked him for autographs or pictures when he isn't on the clock and is on his downtime. If he is on an airplane, he might want to use the restroom, or have a headache, or be dealing with his own stuff. Now, at a charity event, that's different. But, there are times when celebrities have a right to just be people. Perhaps Kate just forgot and took a nap....who knows.....but certainly her trip on a airplane wasn't an event, just her own personal time and she didn't have to do anything but chill out. What I learned from my son, who worked 8 years and won an NFL award in media relations when he worked for the Miami Dolphins and now just as long for this NFL hero, is that you NEVER ask for an autograph. NEVER. Celebs just want to be people when they are off duty!

I hate how fans think they are entitled to an autograph from a star, for all you know she couldn't return but had someone run back to tell them why she couldn't be there but they got too lazy to deliver the message.

Getting to your autograph during a hectic schedule should not have to be her top priority. Life isn't perfect and Kate is a classy woman. She has her reasons. It's not like she's some scumbag like other stars that are too into themselves.
