Kate Moss Thought Timbuktu was a 'Made-Up Place': What About You?

You!
Add Photos & Videos
Kinda like the way we discovered that it was Istanbul, not Constantinople from "They Might Be Giants," Kate Moss discovered while doing an interview that Timbuktu is not just a metaphorical place far, far away.

DT: I've always wanted to go to Timbuktu. First of all I think it is the best name of anywhere in the world.

KM: I thought it was a made-up place!

You learn something new every day, folks. Now come on, be honest, did you know that Timbuktu is a real town in Mali in north Africa?

I thought that Kate Moss was a metaphorical person, far, far removed from reality. Are you bursting my bubble?

So what does a brainless coke head know.. she likely thinks the moon is a big bulb in the sky. Why would she so openly show her stupidity?

Well, Kate is obviously a breeze-brain. Here's Bruce Cockburn from his recording, "Breakfast In New Orleans, Dinner In Timbuktu", "Use Me While You Can":

My favorite lyric from this song is:

Dust of fallen Empires slowly flowing through my hand.

I DID know it was a real place. I wouldn't of been able to you anymore that.
If it came up more in the news or conversation I'd make a point finding out more about.

I knew it was a real place and knew at one time it was in Africa. I must admit though that if you asked me when I first looked at the question I would've said it was in Asia, I confused it with Kathmandu somehow...

Another dumb liberal actress from Hollywood shows that she doesn't know anything about geography. I would be embarrassed if I were her.

Whatever reasons Kate Moss should be embarrassed about this isn't it.
Knowing about this city is just an intellectual exercise in trivia.

    You and Kate aren't alone.

"Nowadays Timbuktu is, before all, a place that bears with it a sense of mystery: a 2006 survey of 150 young Britons found 34% did not believe the town existed, while the other 66% considered it "a mythical place"."

A remote town in the West African country of Mali on the Niger River known for its connection to the Saharan Trade Route centuries ago when gold and salt passed through that town. It is far away from here hence the phrase, "From here to Timbuktu." trade route centuries gold salt passed town phrase timbuktu Timbuktu

It was an awesome city to capture in Medieval 2: Total War because had lots of gold and spices around it to send your merchants to.

My mom didn't know it was a real place though, I remember her mentioning that a long time ago when I said something about it (who knows how that came up).
