For his next project, Johnny Depp is taking on two things that less-experienced actors might be nervous to tackle. No, he isn’t working with kids and animals. The Oscar-nominated star is allegedly going to mess with the mob and Hollywood’s hottest director. Depp has reportedly signed on to play notorious Boston Mafioso, Whitey Bulger. And he’ll be working for helmer, Barry Levinson — not Tinseltown’s man of the hour, Ben Affleck, who also has a Bulger project in development.

No one is likely to question of casting Depp in the part. Bulger was quite a looker in his younger days. And Depp’s got a proven record in the mob movie genre with “Donnie Brasco.” Besides he’s considered one of the great talents of his generation. But it seemed like Affleck had an inside track on the story considering his roots are planted firmly in Boston, where Bulger once ruled the streets. His choice to play the lead was also surely to go undisputed as well, another local boy named Matt Damon.
There’s no news yet about the fate of Affleck’s project, but if he’s going to make it happen he better act fast. Levinson is prepared to go behind the cameras in May with a screenplay by Mark Mallouk based on “Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob” by ex-Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. What do you think: Will Johnny Depp make a good Whitey Bulger?

Yes

Should be interesting. Who else could float from Tonto to Whitey?
"Notorious Boston Mafioso"? Lol...this term applies to an IRISH mobster? No more "Godfather" Sequels for you!
