The Shootist is my favorite because it really depicted what he was dying from while he made the movie, now that took some guts. My other favorite is the Quiet Man.

I wasn't a big fan of his because he mainly played the same character in almost every film. Such was the case with many of the "Stars" of the 30s and 40s. Certain actors only played certain types of roles. But the one movie of his I did enjoy (probably more because of Maureen O'Hara than for any other reason) was the Quiet Man.

That's one of my moms favorite ones as well. She likes it mainly because of the setting.

I liked all of his movies except his "war" movies. Donnovans reef, quiet man, the cowboys, mcclintock, all of them I happen to live about 15 miles from where they filmed true grit and if you know where to look you can still see the landmarks from the film.
John wayne usshered out the last great generation of hollywood actors that were pro american everything that has followed has been less than good film making

I wasn't too much into his war movies either. I liked the charm of the westerns more.

I still like some actors now I liked as a kid. I have a personal disgust for John Wayne and his ilk, who portray themselves as war heroes in movie after movie, when in reality he was a WW2 draft dodger. Yeah I know he's an actor and it's just movies, but after I did 2 combat tours in Vietnam, it changed my mind completely. And I am not able to watch any war movie, especially the kind of garbage Wayne starred in. It makes me want to barf.
