Once again a celebrity is not remembered for what they really were. Not that I condone what one individual did. Don't drag down then one who is not longer with us. RIP in Joe! (he is probably is rolling around in his grave right now!)

When a colleague who does something as heinous as Jerry Sandusky did and you knew about it and let it go on, you no longer are allowed to have anything positive associated with you be it a statue or even a legacy. joe paterno scumbag

I'm not a big Joe Paterno or Penn State fan, but although he could have handled the Sandusky matter better than he did (he admitted it publicly), he does not deserve to take the brunt of the the fault in this matter. He made a great contribution to college football and sportsmanship over a very long and successful career. He was not perfect as none of us are, but overall was a very good man and college football icon.

Maybe if it were your child you'd feel different. Seems the idiocy runs rampant when it comes to sports. No wonder our society is all upside down and there are NO morals anymore.

The good far outweighs his mistake. And thats what we're discussing here, one mistake.

Aside from what he did on the football field to bring success and entertainment to Penn State, the guy loved academics.

Penn State has a very high graduation rate for its football program during his tenure, well above the NCAA average. Not to mention the amount of time and money Paterno and his wife put into the academic side of the university. How many people graduated and went on to a better life because of Paterno?

In the end he made a mistake, a big one, but still just one mistake. During his older declining years he was in the middle of a chain of command issue regarding the report of a staff member. He didn't actually witness the event. He did what the chain of command required. He should have done more, absolutely. But again, he wasn't the actual criminal or the individual who directly witnessed it. Nor was he the top administrator who should have acted. He has culpability, but in the balance of everyone involved its not nearly as high as others. He made one mistake among decades of great work. That one mistake in this case shouldn't define him.

I can't believe you're condoning his actions and minimizing the sexual molestation/abuse/.rape of not one, but several CHILDREN. You sir, and an idiot and should be ashamed of yourself.

How exactly did I condone his actions? I stated very clearly that he made mistakes. Mistakes means he should have done something diferent, something better.

Whats worse is your theory that I'm minimizing the sexual abuse of children. When exactly did I say that wasn't a big deal? Thats a huge deal and the ABUSER should pay a long and awful price. In case you didn't know Paterno wasn't actually the abuser. I know its hard to figure out given that a lot of people don't read or think these days. But Jerry Sandusky is the villain on that count.

What I did was put the whole situation into proper context given the events that unfolded and who knew what. Paterno, again, wasn't the criminal. He didn't directly witness the crimes. He wasn't the top person of power at the university. On the totem of culpability he's low. He could have done more, but he wasn't the villain.

People like you have a shot gun theory to guilt. Anyone who shook hands with Sandusky should probably be tortured in your opinion. Thats not how justice works. And when someone doesn't agree with your clumsy world view you get morally indignant and start shouting accusations at them ... thats the only thin embarassing in this thread. I'm shocked you didn't accuse me of being a molestor actually.

You want morally indignant, I'll give it to you. I have an 8 month old daughter. I loved that that father in Texas beat the man he caught with his daughter to death. Love it. I think the death penalty should exist for child molestors. I have zero tolerance for it. One strike and thats it. Its the most disgusting crime I can think of. I won't have some internet troll whine and bitch to me that I'M minimizing the crime. I take that comment extremely personal. You can rot in hell for all I effing care faceless internet troll. You have no idea who I am and what my feelings are. You disagree with my opinoin on what some barely involved functionary did and you think that gives you the right to make assumptions about me? Thats disgusting. Thats idiotic. I'm not ashamed of myself at all for seeing Paternos role for what it was. I'm physically disgusted at you though for your comments. You can choke on your facepalming cat.

I'll even rerespond to your dopey comments.

In light of the new information that just came out, Paterno is a heel for sure. Now we know for fact that he didn't just report and forget while others failed to act, but that he acted with the purpose of hiding the scandal. Thats criminal. And the remaining officials involved should spend time in prison like Sandusky while Paterno needs to be scrubbed off PSU.

In the meantime I'll maintain that if you ever make the boneheaded accusation that I condone or minimize child sexual abuse for simpling disagreeing with you on details that you'll continue to disgust me. There is absolutely no call to make that kind of charge.

I'm honest enough to admit in the light of new information that Paterno is a heel. I sought out this thread again to change my response. New information shows that he knowingly decided to hide the scandal rather than confront it. Paterno should be scoured from PSU and criminal action certainly needs to take place for the remaining people in positions of authority that attempted to sweep this away.

Joe Paterno was a great man and great Football Coach. I don't care what others say about him that never met this man.
