Even from the grave, no living rock guitarist can compete with Jimi Hendrix. At least, that's Rolling Stone's verdict in their new ranking of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

"His playing was effortless," Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello says of Hendrix. "There's not one minute of his recorded career that feels like he's working hard at it -- it feels like it's all flowing through him."

Rolling Stone gathered a panel of famous guitarists to weigh on on their peers and influences -- and Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Jeff Beck round out the top five guitar gods.

But it's pretty amazing that 41 years after his death at age 27 -- and after only a four-year career as a superstar -- Hendrix still comes out on top. From Hendrix to Eric Clapton to Jimmy Page, click through Rolling Stone's top eight choices and tell us: Who is the greatest guitarist of all time?

James Patrick Page - Zozo. In my opinion, Hendrix was too messy & untidy. I'm not talking about jamming. I'm talking about general play.

Jimmy Hendrix was the most innovative guitarist of his time. His early retirement (death) stopped his progress, which would have been interesting to hear. My interest is BLUES, and Hendrix played it well. Of this list, I choose Eric Clapton, who had many years to develop new techniques. My favorite, blues guitarist was and remains Mike Bloomfield, as heard on Super Session. However, like Hendrix, Bloomfield departed early.

Page was so innovative and an influence on many of the great guitarists that followed. I have a problem with the list: there are average guitar players here like Buddy Holly and Dave Davies (no offense) but how can you leave off Joe Bonamassa, Robin Trower, Steve Vai??

Believe me, I am no one to judge best of guitarist. All I can add is that when Jimi Hendrix was alive, so was music. He added an ingredient that has been lost since his death. We who saw him in person will never forget, and he is now playing to the angels. Thanks, Jimi for the good times.

I grew up listening to the kid next door playing every piece of Hendrix he could get his hands on. Eventually I started humming the licks and learning to play them myself. His style is addictive and his playing transports you into a world inside yourself.

Certainly agood choice in his own right but you have to understand that James Marshall Hendriicks explored this territory on a backwards strung guitar of his own design...

No guitarist is the definite best, there's no way you can compare anything that is different in style, comparing musicians is like comparing art or music taste itself, not everyone likes the same type of music, this poll is thereby redundant, a waste of space.

Each of these guitarists are outstanding and in a class of their own. It's hard to pick one. But hey, how many old hippies are out here? Jimi Hendrix was brilliant. You had to get stoned to really appreciate it. 40 some years later I can listen to it and he's still just as good.

No Hendrix isn't the best. No one is....it's like asking is French #1, or Japanese? Different languages. (I picked B.B. cuz I had to pick one, so went old school, bein' an old guy myself)

It is really hard to compare all these great guitarist and say who is the best. It is totally subjective. But I'd have to go with Eric Clapton. Look at his long and varied career. Hendrix was in the spotlight only 4 years and played psycadellic style jams. (And somewhat sloppy I must say.) While Clapton is smooth and technical.
