Jim Carrey Ditches 'Dumb and Dumber' Sequel: Wise or... Dumb?

The public didn't seem too thrilled about a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel when we asked about it in April. Now it sounds like the project will never see the light of day. According to ETOnline, star Jim Carrey is backing out of "Dumber and Dumber To" because the studios behind it -- New Line and Warner Brothers -- aren't showing it enough love. He reportedly said, "I would have thought 'Dumb and Dumber To' was a no-brainer, after all it's implied in the title."

You might recall the unoffical sequel, "Dumb and Dumberer," but this was going to be a true sequel -- made by the same creators (the Farrelly brothers), starring the same actors (Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels). It was big news when Carrey signed on for the film, because the actor is notorious for refusing to do sequels. "Ace Ventura" is the only film he's followed up on, though rumor has it a proper "Bruce Almighty" sequel is in the works. Do you think Jim Carrey was wise to back out of "Dumb and Dumber To"? Or was it a dumb move?

I was shocked to hear he was going to do the film in the first place. He told everyone after the upset of Ace Ventura 2 that he would never do a sequel again. Some one of his caliber in Hollywood really can make those calls, he has proven himself time and time again and I agree that writers make stupid sequels’, dumb and dumber should stay a stand alone as well as Bruce almighty, and they shouldn’t even consider Ace Ventura 3!

But what do I know im just a fan...

I never liked that drippy character in the first place. Glad he's not going to keep it going. Besides, he's getting to become an "older gentleman." He can play comedy with more sophistication than that. Although some of his roles have gone too far over the top for me, he's still a good comedian and can pull off much better comedic roles if he chooses.

He hasn't made a good movie in years. There was a chance that this one could have been okay and made us laugh a bit.

I'm sure it would be funny, but he can do better than that. Leave a good thing in the past and "one up" yourself with something better.

    Quite Frankly ..
it is a Good Decision to turn down yet another IDIOTIC Sequel ..
there's way, way too much garbage out in the theaters nowadays ..
nothing that I will spend my hard-earned income on ..

Long past time for the luxury of 'entertainment' to know ..
we are NOT 'amused' .. 'entertained' .. and can't afford you anyways ..

I always thought it was one of his worse movies in the first place so distancing himself from it sounds like a good idea to me.

The original was good, but then the sequel just stank. It kinda leave the impression that another sequel will be just as stupid.

Well he was wise to back out if he thought the studios weren't going to make a proper effort. Sequels do usually suck, but the original was very good and enough time has passed to be able to do something interesting with the characters - I mean the whole internet age has happened since the first film....It could have worked...

Personal prejudice, but I didn't care for Dumb and Dumber. If I were Carey and didn't want to revisit Ace Ventura or any other prior successes, I'd emphasize doing something new. Carey's talent is genuine, in spite of those who don't care for his brand of humor.

It's been years since he did the role anyway. Carrey's never been a sequel kind of guy anyway, save for Ace Ventura 2.

They could use make-up and digital effects to take away the aging on him, but I still don't think it'd be the same.

Keep it simple and stick to the original. That was satisfying enough for me.

There's got to be a reason why he felt it wasn't worth it. It's his right to make the choice to do or not to do. He has moved on and done some interesting films since those days..perhaps he decided to not slip back as well.
