Just when everyone thought the Yankees were going to stand pat and remain quiet.. they made alot of noise friday night. They signed Hiroki Kuroda to a 1 year contract but the deal that really jumps out is the Yankees getting RHP Michael Pineda from the Seattle Mariners for catching phenom Jesus Montero. The Mariners also received RHP Hector Noeisi in the trade and the Yankees received minor league pitcher Jose Campos, another highly touted prospect. This trade took everbody by surprise and a trade like this is very rare. You rarely see two teams swap their prized phenoms like that. But the Yankees needed pitching, the Mariners needed hitting. So far I see fans from both sides not liking this trade but let's evaluate this.
Mariners: Receive Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi
The Mariners are a team with the worst offense in baseball and are in desperate need of hitting. At first they were linked to names like Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols, but the M's tried to go a cheaper route. They know that Montero has quite the reputation in the minors as a dangerous hitter and he showed in September that he could possibly be a dangerous hitter in the majors as well. The question is where will Montero play? The Yankees felt highly of his hitting, but just by the way they used him last year they weren't so crazy on his catching. They strictly used him as a DH for the most part. So far Mariner fans are a little disappointed in the trade because they felt Pineda could of been another ace with Felix Hernandez and that they would make an awesome 1-2 punch. But the Mariners are stacked with young pitching and even though Pineda might have had the most upside, these guys will do a good job. They also got Hector Noeisi who could be a pretty solid starter. Pineda has alot more raw talent than Noesi, but I think Noesi will become a pretty solid starter in the future. Let's be honest, the Mariners desperately needed a bat more than they needed a pitcher. Jesus Montero could be the solution to that problem.
Yankees: Received Michael Pineda and Jose Campos
It's been very frustrating to see Brian Cashman just sit on his ass and do nothing to get us a number two starter behind CC Sabathia. Friday though this changed. The Yankees received fireballer Michael Pineda from the Mariners along with Jose Campos. On paper Pineda looks like the guy they've wanted all along. Scouts can't help but love what comes out of this kid's arm. A fastball that has touched triple digits on occasion and a slider which can make any hitter look bad. He's also shown great command, something very rare with young pitchers with live arms. He's only 23 years old too so he's just beginning. Sure we had to give up Montero for him, but the Yankees really needed a number two. Pineda has a very high ceiling, he could easily be a number 2 guy behind Sabathia, possibly an ace in the future.
Final Thoughts: I feel this is a win-win for both teams. I feel why fans from both sides are upset now is because they had to part with their home-grown talent and because this trade came out of the blue. But if you look deep into it, both teams got what they wanted. As a Yankee fan, I'm a bit upset to see Montero go. I did feel he had potential with the bat and I liked him alot. I wish him the best in Seattle. But he didn't have future plans with the Yankees really, and he wouldn't be seeing much playing time with the Yankees since A-Rod and Jeter will be taking up a huge chunk of DH time. Both players come with risks: Pinedas cool finish and home/road splits raised eyebrows and wonder how moving to Yankee Stadium will go with him, same with Montero Mariner fans wonder if Safeco Field will sap alot of his power production similar to Adrian Beltre. The best thing about this trade is both are still kids and have time to grow. I think this will be similar to the Josh Beckett for Hanley Ramirez trade, where both teams benefitted from the deal. Rather give up just Montero for a pitcher like Pineda who could be a future star than give up all the farm system for someone like Matt Cain, Felix Hernandez or Clayton Kershaw. That's my take. Baseball fans, who got the better end of this trade.
