Jennifer Lawrence: "I beat Meryl"

It's OK to joke about Meryl Streep always winning everything, but announcing "I beat Meryl"? Not very classy, Jen.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who rocked, by the way) may have gone a tad too far when they compared being married to James Cameron to "torture."

  3. Paul Rudd and Salma Hayek's teleprompter malfunction

Paul Rudd and Salma Hayek's teleprompter malfunction

What the heck was going on with the teleprompter when Rudd and Hayek were presenting? Good thing they're both so good-looking — we prefer them when they're NOT talking.

  4. Sacha Baron Cohen's "upskirt" joke

    Sacha Baron Cohen's "upskirt" joke

Yup, he went there. Cohen referred to the "upskirt" photos of Anne Hathaway that recently went around, lowering the bar even more than he usually does.

  5. Kevin Costner's tribute to Gregory Peck

Kevin Costner's tribute to Gregory Peck

Costner turned his acceptance speech into a rumination on his early days in Hollywood, but his tribute to Gregory Peck didn't really go anywhere.

  6. Jodie Foster's strange speech

    Jodie Foster's strange speech

We love that Foster came out of the closet, but didn't she do that like a decade ago? And why was she comparing herself to Honey Boo Boo? Nice tribute to her mom, though.

Jennifer Lawrence provided one of the most cringe-worthy moments of Sunday night's Golden Globes when she got on stage to accept the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and right away blurted out, "I beat Meryl."

Sure, it's fine to joke about Meryl Streep always winning everything, but announcing "I beat Meryl"? When you're 22 and you've been in Hollywood for, like, a minute? Not very classy, Jen.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who rocked, by the way) may have gone a tad too far when they compared being married to James Cameron to "torture." And Sacha Baron Cohen lowered the bar even more than he usually does when he referred to the "upskirt" photos of Anne Hathaway that recently made the rounds.

I thought Jennifer Lawrence was quoting Bette Midler from 1st Wives Club. An in joke to the movie buffs and the industry.

Jennifer has a great acting ability and for being so young also not being in Holly Wood all that long I feel she pulled it off darn good.

Actually - I did not find Jennifer Lawrences comment offensive at all. She did beat Meryl - and Meryl is a hard woman to beat - she wins almost everything she is nominated for - she is an excellent actress, but so is Jennifer. The comment I found most offensive was the joke they hurled at poor little Taylor Swift. That was uncalled for

There is a reason the" Meryl" is always nominated (not ALWAYS wins) is because she
is a most talented actor (not personality as most of our present crop of actors are).
    Shame on you Jennifer !

Any evidence that Meryl was offended? If not, it seems strange for so many to be offended for her.

I appreciate your response. Meryl probably laughed when she heard it, who knows, but she's very generous. I, as a professional actor have every right to be offended if
I wish. Since you are not in the business you don't understand my point of view. You see the business the way the media wants you to see it and I certainly understand your prospective. Just as I may not understand the underpinnings of your profession.
Anyway, your comments are valuable and always welcome.

Jennifer was quoting a movie called 1st Wives Club. She said so on David Letterman. It is easy to get confused, though, so I understand.

I don't care what Jodie does in her bedroom, but I don't want to hear about it on my television. And I would say the same about any other celebrity unless they're coming to my bed. Then I might ask a couple of questions.

And Jennifer Lawrence's comment was funny. Even if she didn't know it was from 'The First Wives Club,' it's still what a lot of people would LIKE to hear/say.

Exactly but the trade papers and dumb people will misinterpret it forever. She's only 22 but I highly doubt she would be crass enough to make a statement like that. At least not if she wants to keep working in movies..you know? She is anything but dumb. I think she has a really really bright future ahead of her.

I think she was trying to show that despite being quite young, she has knowledge of what came before. But it wasn't a quote most people knew so it fell very flat.

    What was she thinking?

I'm pretty sure Meryl thought it was pretty funny. Her movie was okay but it wasn't award winning worthy. Besides it's not like she's never going to be nominated ever again, she's got the most noms out of anyone ever. Jennifer really deserved that award and she's got about as much talent that Meryl did when she started.

To me it just sounds like the SH writer was easily offended by every little thing.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. I cringed at this moment. They stood there and looked so confused lol.

I don't see how Jodi's speech was strange. Jennifer's comment was a little awkward but Meryl is always nominated for everything and the playful jab was just a reference to how she beat one of the most celebrated actresses of all time.
