“Spirit Bound,” which is the latest in the “Vampire Academy” book series, recently debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list, indicating that we may have another “Twilight” phenomenon on our hands.
MORE vampires? Oy.
The “Vampire Academy” series debuted back in 2007, and now consists of five successful novels, all penned by American author Richelle Mead. A sixth one, “Last Sacrifice,” is set for release on December 7, 2010. There are 1.5 million copies of the “Vampire Academy” books in prints, with a spinoff series of six more books currently in the works.
The books are set in a private boarding school populated by different types of vampires. The heroine, Rose Hathaway, is a strong but flawed seventeen-year-old half-vampire, half-human. She is being trained at the academy to be a bodyguard to Princess Lissa Dragomir, a full-fledged, higher ranking vampire and her BFF. While in training, Rose falls in love with her older, but smokin’ hot teacher, Dimitri Belikov.
Fans apparently can’t get enough of the series’ engaging mixture of vampire hierarchy mixed with “Mean Girls”-style, high school socio-politics. Not to mention the forbidden love storyline involving the 17 year-old girl and her swarthy, irresistible older man. All set in a cool, Harry Potter kind of Hogwarts boarding school.
Okay, we’re sold. And when does the movie come out?
Does this sound like an intriguing read? Or are you already a fan? Or does the emergence of yet another vampire phenomenon make you want to drive a stake through your own heart?

Rarely Up 4 Air 2010/06/03 18:54:40Yes, Vampire Academy is better than Twilight.

Richelle did such a better job than Stephanie. The writing is better. The characters are strong and so much emotion goes into it. It makes you laugh out loud, it also makes you cry your eyes out.
Twilight isn't as bad as everyone says but it's boring. I don't like Bella's weak character and hate her romance with Edward. She thinks Edward is the "PERFECT" man which is annoying.
So yeah I love VA more. I'm not sure I like Twilight at all! Anyway... and GOSH I LOVE DIMITRI !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
And Twilight? Nothing but trash.
But I just got done reading Spirit Bound, horrible cliff hanger...so mad!
I absolutely love the Twilight book series but I adore the Vampire Academy series :D
While VA isn't as poorly written as Twilight, it's still very juvenile and not really worth the read.
Opinion is not what I'm talking about, quality is. The poor writing in Twilight is only PART of why I can't stand the novel. The poor writing in VA is only part of why I have no interest in it. But no matter what your opinion, both series are poorly written, and that is simply a fact.
so.........
1. You know nothing about literature and therefore could not be a book nerd.
2. You are a preteen with a small mind who should definitely stay in school. Hopefully, said child will outgrow this.
3. You are a middle-aged with no social life to speak off, who cannot get a date, and is likely overweight or ugly or both, and, therefore, must fantasise with the 12-year-old girls about the "perfect" man.
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt by going with the first. Be grateful I didn't assume it was either of the latter two.
2. I'm 13. All my teachers say that I'm brilliant... if only I would do my homework, so I don't think I have a small mind.
3. I don't have much of a social life because for some reason everyone thinks I'm weird. Everyone loves to spread rumors about me (probably since I'm shy and won't fight back) which means guys avoid me like the plague. I've been called beautiful once, by a guy who wanted to kiss me, but a week later he liked a different girl, so I don't know... and this other guy who wanted to kiss me, the first thing he thought when he saw me was, 'Damn, that girl has ginormous boobs!' So basically, I'm a short brunette who is unremarkable except for her dark greenish eyes and overly big chest. I don't know if that's ugly or not. And I was fantasizing about the perfect man WAY before I even heard of Twilight. First was Bugs Bunny, then Freddy Flintstone, then Peter Pan, then Harry Potter, and so on.
Sad that you need to fantasise, I can get any man I know, should I choose to. And a good lot of women as well. Also, "ginormous" is not a word, little girl. Use real words if you're going to converse with me. It's also sad that only boys who want in your pants will compliment you. Oh well, not my problem.
Go read a real book, kid, and start using real words.
And what's you're point about being able to get any guy you know? Maybe you're prettier than me, or more interesting, more talented, funnier, less shy, less pasty, more confident... I don't know, but how is that relevant? Also, ginormous is the word he used, so it's the word I wrote. Also, people say it and it has meaning so even if it isn't an official dictionary word, it's a word, like 'fantabulous' and 'smartical'. Also, guys who want in my pants? No, people tell me I'm smart all the time, they just don't compliment my looks often. Besides, I'm thirteen, I'm don't really want that right now, so I don't really care.
Also, what do you classify as a real book? To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee? The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton? Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson? The Color Purple by Alice Walker? Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling? Diary of Anne Frank? Night by Elie Wiesel? Hamlet by William Shakespeare?
By the way, it's spelled 'fantasize', not 'fantasise'.
