Lara Croft, star of the popular "Tomb Raider" franchise, is probably one of the best-known video game heroines to date. She even got a couple of film spin-offs starring Angelina Jolie. But an upcoming reboot game, titled simply "Tomb Raider," is receiving criticism for trying to reshape the character by explaining her past. Some are even claiming that the new back story is sexist.
The new game will focus on Lara Croft's life evolution into a battle-hardened heroine. According to producer Ron Rosenberg, the game shows her "turning into a cornered animal" and almost getting raped. The idea is to show how Croft became the strong person that she is in the series, but critics argue that it's taking advantage of the character's gender and "painting woman as particularly vulnerable." Do you think the plot point concerning Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider" is sexist?

I find the new heroine refreshing because of her human frailness and vulnerabilities and the overcoming of her circumstances. We (Tomb Raider fans) get to see (and hopefully be a part of) her evolution into the kick @#& character we've come to love. I say good job and I look forward to this game in the fall. First they didn't like the bouncing boobs and hot pants, okay i get that. But now this? Acceptable is what consumers deem it, not some whinny, PC nannies. If this is not your cup of tea you can always go play an E or better yet an EC rated game, let the grown ups play what we like and leave us alone.

Other reasons this exists is the double-standard. Female characters are expected to be passive, and weak. For this reason she has to lose her feminine persona, and rebuild a more masculine one. Ergo she must die, and be reborn.
And no, I don't weigh 200 lbs, wear flannel, and refrain from shaving.
People don't come out the womb hardcore; life experiences.
I was BORN hardcore, okay?
When I was born, I fast-roped down my mothers imbilical-cord, and military low crawled out the doctors room. After, I got a scalpal and cleared every hospital room with no firearm. I got into a close quarters fight with another baby, and he was a skilled fighter, I think he was a Russian Spetsnaz. I finally killed him, but I came out of there with only a few minor cuts, except for the big one which is how I got circumcision. When all of this happened, the doctor said, "That is one hardcore rough and tough baby." Then he awarded me the Medal of Honor for my superior military tactics in combat...
then I shot the doc for slapping me in the ass...
:D
As a three year old you have a distinct tactical advantage over the keenest voodoo wizard. Kicks to the nuts.
After the bloodbath that I started and I finished and saving the day and busting up a cult my mom pulled up.
Then I had apple juice.
If the gaming world was filled with as many Alyx Vances and Jade, action reporters as it was with Marcus Fenix's and Master Chiefs, then this approach would be a breath of fresh air. As it is...I could be giving it more credit then it deserves, but I'm going to wait for some more information.
Way to ruin the fun.
-Superman is a terrible character, and he is Superannoying. Lack luster character.
-Hawkeye has been through many traumatizing operations and he lost most of his hearing.
Batman - Watched his parents die, got his ass whooped a lot, and went through the toughest training in the world
Rambo - Tortured, watched his squad get slaughtered.
Wolverine - Killed his own father. Fought in dozens of battles.
Nobody starts off as a badass (except me :P), they always go through a traumatic transformation. That is part of being a Superhero. Exceeding your traumatic experience and turning that traumatic experience into a positive one. Now we have Laura Croft who is going through a traumatic experience and she conquered all obstacles. That is what makes her a badass.
Remember she is an expression, she is suppose to be a symbol for women who have gotten raped, to show them that they can over come it and become stronger. They are trying to revamp her into a symbol of empowerment and feminine strength. Which I think is a great thing they are trying to do. What other hero do you know allows rape victims to look up too?
In fact, it adds to the depth of her character. When I played the first Tomb Raider, my opinion was "she is so awesome". But as the series continued, I went from thinking she was awesome to noticing her being a one note character . I lost interest in the future games because of that.
Now that they are putting a back story towards her character, I might just get it. I want to know who she is and what made her into the bad ass she is now.
