Is the Upcoming 'Tomb Raider' Game Sexist?

Lara Croft, star of the popular "Tomb Raider" franchise, is probably one of the best-known video game heroines to date. She even got a couple of film spin-offs starring Angelina Jolie. But an upcoming reboot game, titled simply "Tomb Raider," is receiving criticism for trying to reshape the character by explaining her past. Some are even claiming that the new back story is sexist.

The new game will focus on Lara Croft's life evolution into a battle-hardened heroine. According to producer Ron Rosenberg, the game shows her "turning into a cornered animal" and almost getting raped. The idea is to show how Croft became the strong person that she is in the series, but critics argue that it's taking advantage of the character's gender and "painting woman as particularly vulnerable." Do you think the plot point concerning Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider" is sexist?

If anything the games are becoming artistic and entertaining because of the realism. I find the new heroine refreshing because of her human frailness and vulnerabilities and the overcoming of her circumstances. We (Tomb Raider fans) get to see (and hopefully be a part of) her evolution into the kick @#& character we've come to love. I say good job and I look forward to this game in the fall. First they didn't like the bouncing boobs and hot pants, okay i get that. But now this? Acceptable is what consumers deem it, not some whinny, PC nannies. If this is not your cup of tea you can always go play an E or better yet an EC rated game, let the grown ups play what we like and leave us alone.

The game is not sexist. The writers who wrote the plot, and story are not sexist. The CEOs are not sexist. This is an example of lazy writing. Full Stop.

Other reasons this exists is the double-standard. Female characters are expected to be passive, and weak. For this reason she has to lose her feminine persona, and rebuild a more masculine one. Ergo she must die, and be reborn.

Right showing her as human being and how her terrible experinces that turned her hard core is sexist. Insted of when the game first came out and all of her "Perks" were amplafied for every young man to enjoy..

I have no clue what you are talking about,
    I was BORN hardcore, okay?

When I was born, I fast-roped down my mothers imbilical-cord, and military low crawled out the doctors room. After, I got a scalpal and cleared every hospital room with no firearm. I got into a close quarters fight with another baby, and he was a skilled fighter, I think he was a Russian Spetsnaz. I finally killed him, but I came out of there with only a few minor cuts, except for the big one which is how I got circumcision. When all of this happened, the doctor said, "That is one hardcore rough and tough baby." Then he awarded me the Medal of Honor for my superior military tactics in combat...

then I shot the doc for slapping me in the ass...

I was also born hardcore. When I went to daycare for the first time I unwittingly stumbled on an ancient southern voodoo cult trying to resurrect a dead god and offering up human sacrifices to do it. All of the other small children ages 2-6 were terrified but not me. I realized that if I was going to make it to five o'clock (When mom was picking me up) I was going to have to fight for my life.

As a three year old you have a distinct tactical advantage over the keenest voodoo wizard. Kicks to the nuts.

After the bloodbath that I started and I finished and saving the day and busting up a cult my mom pulled up.

    Then I had apple juice.

We need to stop worrying about this stupid stuff and worry more about being able to afford the game. We are too politically correct and worry about stuff that should be left up to the person purchasing the game. Most would love to have a job more then worrying about Laura Croft possible sexist story line.

No single game is sexist. Well, okay, SOME are sexist. But a single game that portrays a woman as vulnerable or as a sex object is not sexist by nature. No, its the fact that women are ALWAYS sex objects or weak and vulnerable is the problem. This new interpretation of Tomb Raider is actually interesting in a way, but the fact that it takes a character that has been teetering between sex object and at least empowered woman, and makes her vulnerable just feels like a missed opportunity.

If the gaming world was filled with as many Alyx Vances and Jade, action reporters as it was with Marcus Fenix's and Master Chiefs, then this approach would be a breath of fresh air. As it is...I could be giving it more credit then it deserves, but I'm going to wait for some more information.

It's extremely depressing. Why can't she just be the person who saw that she needed to take action and be a bad-ass? Why does she have to have been "turning into a cornered animal"? I understand why they're mad. With male characters, they don't have to be at their most vulnerable to take action. Why does it have to be that way for a woman?

    Way to ruin the fun.

Um because most stories you start off with a character who is already badass. If it was an origin story, then the male lead would be a punk ass. Just like this story, it is an origin story. For example, Batman wasn't always a badass, he was a weak little pussy who always got his ass kicked...

Not every hero starts that way. Their origin story isn't always like that. Like with Superman, Hawkeye, Tony Stark, etc. Not everyone has to be violated to be bad-ass.
  • Jackal Z-Wolf 2012/06/25 02:04:39

-Tony Starks was tortured by his captives. Saw people get slaughtered with the same weapons he designed.
-Superman is a terrible character, and he is Superannoying. Lack luster character.
-Hawkeye has been through many traumatizing operations and he lost most of his hearing.

Batman - Watched his parents die, got his ass whooped a lot, and went through the toughest training in the world

Rambo - Tortured, watched his squad get slaughtered.

Wolverine - Killed his own father. Fought in dozens of battles.

Nobody starts off as a badass (except me :P), they always go through a traumatic transformation. That is part of being a Superhero. Exceeding your traumatic experience and turning that traumatic experience into a positive one. Now we have Laura Croft who is going through a traumatic experience and she conquered all obstacles. That is what makes her a badass.

Were any one of them almost raped though? The point is that even though they went through hell, rape is an absolutely different ballgame. I understand how everyone went through crap. But, seriously they didn't need to add that to her's. It seems completely unnecessary. There are other ways to become a badass s you've proven. They didn't need to make this her's.
  • Jackal Z-Wolf 2012/06/25 06:59:53

Trust me other heroes went through worst.

Remember she is an expression, she is suppose to be a symbol for women who have gotten raped, to show them that they can over come it and become stronger. They are trying to revamp her into a symbol of empowerment and feminine strength. Which I think is a great thing they are trying to do. What other hero do you know allows rape victims to look up too?

Whatever. I still would have rather she got imprisoned or killed her own parent. She's a symbol. I just wish they would have used someone else with this origin. I don't like it for her.

Ya he is right check you superheros, almost every badass superhero or villain started as some pure hearted kid who went through some traumatic experience, who then over came it and became a baddass.

Eh, not really. I get where other people are coming from (on the sexist side) but I don't think this is bad.
In fact, it adds to the depth of her character. When I played the first Tomb Raider, my opinion was "she is so awesome". But as the series continued, I went from thinking she was awesome to noticing her being a one note character . I lost interest in the future games because of that.
Now that they are putting a back story towards her character, I might just get it. I want to know who she is and what made her into the bad ass she is now.

People are to sensitive these days. On another note the game looks amazing. Extremely realistic and good storyline. We've come along way since Pacman and Sinistar.
