Is the Upcoming 'Tomb Raider' Game Sexist?

Lara Croft, star of the popular "Tomb Raider" franchise, is probably one of the best-known video game heroines to date. She even got a couple of film spin-offs starring Angelina Jolie. But an upcoming reboot game, titled simply "Tomb Raider," is receiving criticism for trying to reshape the character by explaining her past. Some are even claiming that the new back story is sexist.

The new game will focus on Lara Croft's life evolution into a battle-hardened heroine. According to producer Ron Rosenberg, the game shows her "turning into a cornered animal" and almost getting raped. The idea is to show how Croft became the strong person that she is in the series, but critics argue that it's taking advantage of the character's gender and "painting woman as particularly vulnerable." Do you think the plot point concerning Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider" is sexist?

If anything the games are becoming artistic and entertaining because of the realism. I find the new heroine refreshing because of her human frailness and vulnerabilities and the overcoming of her circumstances. We (Tomb Raider fans) get to see (and hopefully be a part of) her evolution into the kick @#& character we've come to love. I say good job and I look forward to this game in the fall. First they didn't like the bouncing boobs and hot pants, okay i get that. But now this? Acceptable is what consumers deem it, not some whinny, PC nannies. If this is not your cup of tea you can always go play an E or better yet an EC rated game, let the grown ups play what we like and leave us alone.

I wouldn't say it's sexist. However, I would need to play the game to really give a proper review. I really am excited about the game coming out though. :)

She's a heroine. She has power. She's strong. She can fight for herself.

Who gives a hell what she is wearing, she kicks ass!

Someone gets shipwrecked, stuck on a island, her friends getting slaughtered by the locals, the wilderness trying to eat her alive and she's never had an intense violent conflict before. And because She's a female, this is sexist? As opposed to what? The Anatomically incorrect, daisy dukes wearing, gun-toting wet dream of every 14 year old boy back in the early 90's? I'm sure if you were getting nearly killed every second without any war experience, you'd be feeling like a cornered animal with no claws yourself. You people need to lay off the Chris Croker juice.

It's not about the fact that she's a woman; it's about the intended rape. You people need to learn to read.

No, it's using IMPLIED rape to make a Mary Sue, which gets all the bleeding hearts to cry up such a storm.

It certainly sounds sexist, but so what? As long as it is SEXY, it really doesn't matter how sexist it is.

I, Personally , cannot for this game. I've always loved Lara Croft because she is a woman who is allowed to be bad-ass and vulnerable st the same time. All of the newer games have given get that, why should this one suddenly be "sexist"?

that actually happens to some women

i think it just lends to the realism, and calling it sexist or saying it 'portrays women as weak' is really hurtful towards the women who have actually gone through this

There should be an "Undecided" option. For obvious reasons, the information on this site can only be trusted so far, and I haven't read any of the reviews or release information, but if they are going to start complaining the new game will be sexist, why aren't they complaining about the entire series?

Let's stay real,... their is a difference between the sexes, and this leads to different experiences. Just because a liberal says "there should be a total equality" doesn't make it true... for instance, I suck at child birth.

i can't think of a single game where the main character is almost raped. lara croft has typically been a very strong character. now that we're seeing her more vulnerable side, it's... sexist? go away, critics. you don't deserve to criticize stuff that you don't even understand.

Rape has absolutely nothing to do with being weak and vulnerable. Men and women of all shapes, sizes, strength, and power get raped. Are you one of these "it's the victims fault!" people?
  • Isha Dw... Morrison 2012/06/24 19:46:19
    Isha Dwesar
HELL NO. i accept completely what you're saying, those were supposed to be 2 completely separate points, i worded it badly. all i meant was that rape is used in the media so frequently to portray women specifically as people who need to be protected at all times. no way is it the victims fault in ANY circumstance. i was just trying to say that the bit about attempted rape is cliche of the media and that i think that it is taking advantage of lara's gender to make her past make her look weak and scared inside still. that's all.

Depends on how they do it. It could turn out sexist if they focus on her being "weak" because she is a woman. But it could also end up being a very strong story about empowering women.

yes and no. Make her into a cornered animal sure, but rape? come on, in other origin games how often is sexual violation a building block on the male lead's journey to becoming amazing? Why victimize her in a way that turns her story into something a little more cliche. How many times have you seen the female storyline, "I was just a weak/innocent woman, but was raped/almost raped and now i kick a$$..." I was hoping for more from the Tomb Raider franchise.
  • NioEX nokie 2012/06/22 18:12:59

Would "I was just a weak/innocent woman, but was almost killed in a horrible manner and now i kick a$$..." be better suited? Because I'm sure every game over screen one would get from this game would involved her getting killed and NOT raped. Which was already confirmed last week isn't the case.

Alright unleash the Double standards BS please-

So some think it's sexist because of the fact Lara is kinda lost in there, scared and kinda doesn't know what to do? isn't it supposed to be a sort of "Origin"-esque story/plot? Of course she's gonna be weak and all, but I expect her to evolve into some sort of kickass character.
I mean, when I saw the trailer and such, first thing I thought was "oh, a young woman lost in an island? or jungle, w/e, trying to survive". The weakening of women was the last thing that crossed my mind. I mean, it displays a more "human" approach, which is awesome.

All I have to say is damn I'm glad in Dead Space we have Isaac Clarke, and not Irina Clarke. I can easily imagine the response from some people.

    This is so stupid!

They create a story about her overcoming hardship and becoming the bad*** with big boobs and hot pants that gamers have followed for years, and they call it sexist? Give me (and everyone else) a break!

These people need to go over themselves and understand that if they don't like the game's story, they need to shut up and play another game.

I'm more undecided than anything. I mean, you don't need a bad or vulnerable experience to become badass or tough. Personality and interests have a role in who we grow to be. In fact, you don't really need to explain or validate why she is the way she is. I'm unimpressed with the backstory more than the sexist issue. Lara is a lady of a manor house, who is nifty with a pair of guns. If we could play a game which saw her grow into a fearless raider, that would be better than this game which needs to create an excuse for why she is who she is. That is what makes me more unhappy.
