Is the Upcoming 'Tomb Raider' Game Sexist?

Lara Croft, star of the popular "Tomb Raider" franchise, is probably one of the best-known video game heroines to date. She even got a couple of film spin-offs starring Angelina Jolie. But an upcoming reboot game, titled simply "Tomb Raider," is receiving criticism for trying to reshape the character by explaining her past. Some are even claiming that the new back story is sexist.

The new game will focus on Lara Croft's life evolution into a battle-hardened heroine. According to producer Ron Rosenberg, the game shows her "turning into a cornered animal" and almost getting raped. The idea is to show how Croft became the strong person that she is in the series, but critics argue that it's taking advantage of the character's gender and "painting woman as particularly vulnerable." Do you think the plot point concerning Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider" is sexist?

If anything the games are becoming artistic and entertaining because of the realism. I find the new heroine refreshing because of her human frailness and vulnerabilities and the overcoming of her circumstances. We (Tomb Raider fans) get to see (and hopefully be a part of) her evolution into the kick @#& character we've come to love. I say good job and I look forward to this game in the fall. First they didn't like the bouncing boobs and hot pants, okay i get that. But now this? Acceptable is what consumers deem it, not some whinny, PC nannies. If this is not your cup of tea you can always go play an E or better yet an EC rated game, let the grown ups play what we like and leave us alone.

Not at all, and anyone who claims so is out of their damn minds, this is one of the only games that shows a woman as strong and independent, she doesn't need a love interest, and all throughout the game she kicks ass. She gets her ass kicked by like 5 guys at one point, and a few minutes later she's back to strangling them with her bow and shooting them up.

This is incredibly sexist! Trying to make Lara Croft seem vulnerable. Everyone knows blood thirsty bandits have a very strict moral code when it comes to women.

This is sexist indeed. No need to be cornered like an animal or almost raped to become a strong woman. What upsets me here is that if it were about a male hero that guy would never been shown as weak.

Crysis 2 did depict the main character as weak and near death without his suit, and although I've never played them Lightning(*Edit, this was wrong it was the character "Hope"..) in the latest Final Fantasy games is also depicted as weak, the thing is Lara was actually never shown as weak, the guy who tried to rape her never got the chance, and end up dead at the hands of Lara.

People are quick to jump on the sexist train, and the racist train about pretty much anything. It's just how they decided to do the story. Honestly showing a past as a victim to becoming hardened is fairly realistic. Women in general are more vulnerable than men, physically and emotionally. Breaking out of it is a great way to lead a story, in my opinion.

You can't expect Lora to have been tough all her life, not everyone was awesome when they first start out, look at Raiden. During the Big Shell incident he was kind of a puss, but next time I saw him in south america he was a total badass.

Why can't she just be a strong character without having been a previous victim? Previously she was just a treasure hunter, now they make her a victim of assault to push her to being a strong person.

What does that have to do with sexism? That just sounds like you're complaining about the quality of the game's writing.

Lara Croft is a fictional character in a fictional game. She can be whatever the game developer team wants her to be. People need to stop trying to censor fictional media content for the sake of political correctness.

It's not only vaguely sexist it's vaguely racist. They seem to hate the idea of Lara being English, alongside wanting to make her less powerful by taking away her aristocratic title and taking away her university degree in archaeology.

It's giving the illusion that women can't be tough unless something bad happened to them.

I don't think it's sexist, it's more realistic. I think it's less sexist than the previous games in the series, her body is more realistic. Reading Kotaku, the developers of Lara Croft wanted the player to want to "protect her" and that doesn't sound sexist to me. Yes, rape is a sensitive subject but it does happen. Let's face it, people! Most women are physically more vulnerable compared to most men.

I find that miniature outfit Lara has is sexist. How could she fight in that little costume, I personally am not a fan of Lara Croft and with little outfit, I'm not having second thoughts.
