Is 'The Bachelor' Racist?

ABC production companies Warner Horizon Television, Next Entertainment, and NZK Productions are facing a major lawsuit alleging racial discrimination. Two African-American men, aspiring NFL player Christopher Johnson and friend Nathaniel Claybrooks, auditioned for "The Bachelor" in Nashville and claim they weren't given a fair shot. They say one producer asked them what they were doing there, and never called back.

Executive producer Mike Fleiss, who is also being sued, has already been accused of discrimination, mostly based on the show's lack of diversity. He once told Entertainment Weekly, "I think Ashley [Hebert] is 1/16th Cherokee Indian, but I cannot confirm. But that is my suspicion! We really tried, but sometimes we feel guilty of tokenism ... We always want to cast for ethnic diversity, it's just that for whatever reason, they don’t come forward. I wish they would." Do you think this new lawsuit is evidence of racial bias on "The Bachelor"?

Considering black people have only been staring in their own shows for what the past 40 years at the most. The number of shows shown on primerime can be named and counted. Your argument isn't really valid.

I'm not even going to get into this... You're right, you win. The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are totally racist.

This is not a competition. Just pointing out the fact that minority presence in TV is still in its infancy. Maybe they are racist and maybe they aren't. If the producer is claiming in an interview minorities don't audition. That in fact is a lie. Then it would appear they are. In regards to race relations. It is the unwillingness to have an honest and frank discussion. That has our nation racially at odds.

True, although I'd love to see minority presence on television that isn't interracial. I'd like to see a black couple or an asian couple together that is not stereotypical- and that's probably too much to ask for.

I have seen couples like that. Unfortunately to many audiences don't think they are authentic enough. The last show with a black couple in primetime that was not stereotypical was "The Cosby Show." I do like watching shows like "Reed Between the Lines" and "Let's Stay Together" on BET. The couples on each show are black professionals. The first show is along the lines of the Cosby's. I believe that is because Malcolm Jamal Warner is part of the cast. These shows make us look normal and not like the two headed monsters that are so popular or the clown like characters.

Lani honestly everything else is actually white. Who owns and runs all the major networks and their subsidiaries. The majority of the sitcoms found on major networks have a predominantly white cast. Two of the biggest shows on cable Friends and Seinfeld had all white cast. Just because white isn't in the name doesn't mean that isn't what it is.

How about there are too many ways that could be a total lawsuit waiting to happen? Too many land mines with casting and the potential lawsuits over the outcome.

WAY too many folks with a sensitivity issues about all that to make a show both realistic AND entertaining AND non offensive to some faction of the equation.

I will reiterate its time to have that discussion. Everyone puts all their cards on the table. If we get it all out. No one can claim one thing or another.

Take a step back and really look at this issue objectively. Up until the 70's black people were either a token character on a show or not on at all. It was not until shows like the Jefferson's and Good times that changed. It was due to the lack of black representation on what amounts to white owned media outlets. That BET seemed to be the only option to change that. Shoot MTV started in 1982. It was not until Michael Jackson released thriller that a black music artist was allowed on the channel. So your comment about why don't channels like BET create their own show is ridiculous. Thats the reason the station was created to begin with. Because black people were not fully included on the other channels. So instead of jumping to the race card conclusion. Why doesn't the bachelor include other ethnicities. It doesn't just have to be black people.

MTV started in 1981 and MJ's song, Bluer than blue played 18th. . .mj was a big part of MTV, but Yo MTV raps with Ed lover is what helped bring hip hop and rap to white kids. Funny how there is a before and after MTV; kids started coming together.

I think, bachelor is unwatchable. Here's a guy or gal going going out with 20 different people seeing who kisses the best. Tell the others, I will keep you, if theirs isn't better than yours. . .dumb show.

Fat, skinny, white, red, black, etc. . .dumb, smart, white collar, blue collar, rich, poor, etc. . .there will always be some kind of like or dislike.

Why do people have these biases? To feel better about their selfs. Listen to anyone thats preaches against another and there is a common theme: we are better and they aren't.

As far as the bachelor, I think, they are trying to target a demographic: the single white women. So, the true question here should be, is it illegal to target just a white or black, male or female demographic? If, it is than advertisements are the next target to these kinds of lawsuits. . .than other race groups will be targeted. . .

I don't see the end, but this is America and anyone can sue to get their day in court.

If people don't apply then maybe they are the racists for not wanting to date a White Guy or Girl. I've seen both black Guys and Black girls on the show so what's the problem.

The token black or latina doesn't last through the first rose. The main character has NEVER been any race other than Anglo-Saxon. That is the complaint.

So what! If the cast of Characters also don't step up from others that have a darker melanine in their skin that's their fault not the shows. Also, the cast of characters is also nominated from a lot of people.

I am sick and tired of we have to have some racial diversity just for the fact of racial diversity. Where is the racial diversity on the many Latino TV Channels or the NAACP Awards. If the Whites had an only White Music award people would be up in arms about it.

Gosh people need to grow up and stop looking at skin color and just look at people as they are....one race...human.

No, I've seen people of other ethnicities on the show, however, supposedly the male or female that is trying to find their true love, thus far have not been in to mating with other races. The women usually stay on the show a lot longer than the men of other races. Perhaps they should start doing a show, where the majority of the participants are of ethnic backgrounds, this would keep everybody happy.

That's like segregating. One show for with all whites and one with different ethnic backrounds. Do you think before you type?
