Is 'The Bachelor' Racist?

ABC production companies Warner Horizon Television, Next Entertainment, and NZK Productions are facing a major lawsuit alleging racial discrimination. Two African-American men, aspiring NFL player Christopher Johnson and friend Nathaniel Claybrooks, auditioned for "The Bachelor" in Nashville and claim they weren't given a fair shot. They say one producer asked them what they were doing there, and never called back.

Executive producer Mike Fleiss, who is also being sued, has already been accused of discrimination, mostly based on the show's lack of diversity. He once told Entertainment Weekly, "I think Ashley [Hebert] is 1/16th Cherokee Indian, but I cannot confirm. But that is my suspicion! We really tried, but sometimes we feel guilty of tokenism ... We always want to cast for ethnic diversity, it's just that for whatever reason, they don’t come forward. I wish they would." Do you think this new lawsuit is evidence of racial bias on "The Bachelor"?

So it's ok then to have networks like BET (Black Entertainment Television) but if a network advertised itself as WNT (White Network Television) that would be racist?

There are now several networks which supposedly put a focus on black Americans, like Black Starz where the only reason they choose the programming is there is at least one black person in the movie. Centric is another one doing the same thing so they scream Token Black Television.

There are a lot of things which seem unfair until you really examine the situation asking why is it wrong for a show that only uses white people but it is fine to have programs that are blacks only that even advertise they are blacks only.

There are so many talented black actors, producers and script writers that you would think they would be able to do movies and television using black actors and actresses without the overt "blacks only" label as if it's set in a black community, this is what you would expect. I love horror movies and there have been several with all black casts that are either stereotypical black or they are depicted as if there are only black people in America.

It's the effort to make it seem all black that is the problem and that is the very thing that is being asked here... are they purposely excluding non whites and tr...

Nothing crazy about that as if black Americans can have overtly blacks only programming... then so can whites.

Where the focus should be is on networks like BET that overtly promotes itself as black entertainment and networks like Black Starz which seem to exist only to air movies with token black actors. Starz creates it's own programming and if they have a Black Starz network then shouldn't they create programming where black actors and actresses play a substantial part in the movie instead of advertising it as "Black" just because there's a five second clip with a black man sitting at a table... that's hardly a movie with black stars in it correct?

Maybe, you should watch BET. Blacks cannot have it both ways. BET was created because ABC, CBS, and NBC didn't produced many black theme programs. These networks are considered white theme programing, basically! They sometimes have black theme programing; unlike BET, in which, you will not see any white theme programing or white actors and actresses at all. If BET is warranted, white programing is warranted as well. You thinketh!

And your point for saying this IS? Much as I hate BET, we only have one network and its not even major. So to fight to be on a major network, and to be recognized is a of important not for just blacks but for all other minorities out there. So like I said before your point is??????!!!!

No, just because they were not chosen doesn't mean that they were not given a fair shot. How can they prove this? It probably is racist, but none of us will ever know for certain.

Who would even want to be given a fair shot? The entire concept of this show disgusts me. I've watched Excused, and I know exactly the type of quality these shows attract.

It's more sexist than racist, but yeah. I've seen the show over the seasons. The entire show is white-washed. This wouldn't be a bad thing if the show was set in France, Germany, or any other majority white nation, but this is America, and to see a lack of other ethnicities is discouraging. And no, adding two black guys won't make the show any more diverse. There's this stupid idea that if you add a few black people things suddenly become diverse.

Besides, we all know those two brothers would've been eliminated first episode anyway, lol.

I wish there was a maybe option. There isn't enough information to make a real decision that goes beyond mere speculation and the fact that this is in Tennessee. However, I don't understand why these men would want to go on the Bachelor, because honestly, if they want gold diggers, they can find them everywhere. I dont know any real lifelong relationships that former bachelor/bachelorette contestants have experienced. :/ Please just go out and meet soulmates, people!

Popular network shows have long had problems with interracial dating and coupling. There are a few shows that break this mold nowadays, but for the most part, many do not. The bachelor certainly is no exception. I hope they lose craploads of money in their lawsuit. They deserve to.

What if the contestant is not interested in dating other races? Shouldn't they attempt to choose people that actually have a shot? Maybe the woman is racist or she's just not attracted to other races (she has a right to feel that way).

If that is the case then the show should still be held responsible for not responsibly vetting their "contestants". There is no excuse in this day and age for claiming racists attitudes or prejudices as "personal preferences" and leaving it at that.

Very good point. Just because there is no representation, does not automatically mean racist. Then too it could be a case of their egos being bruised. I think this may be the case.

He was probably thinking "What er them dang n*ggers doing here! We won't be callin' no darkies" smh, but no the fact that he asked a black man what he was doing on the show even though the answer was obvious has nothing to do with race. C'mon.

In this situation for this particular show "NO" it is not "racist" to cast main characters other than color. The point of the shows is to select main characters that will maintain high ratings, which translates to money. They pick and choose those individuals that will hopefully bring the viewers that can and do achieve higher rating, period. The words "Racist" and "Discrimination" are used much more by those that want an advantage in any chosen market. The problem with these that proclaim these words in most cases have not the talent or gift they believe they have and use words such as these to excuse themselves for the lack of talent. There are many individuals of color that achieve great success without drawing the race card because they want to be successful based on their individual talent or gift, not skin color which is in itself why they succeed. If you wish to be successful in any chosen field just do it and stop using excuses. I for one do not want it any other way.

Because black people have too much pride and class to stoop on
a level of seeming desperate for another human being and competing like a cattle call for the guy's or female's attention and affection; and not quite sure that's real love, more like lust. The show is a turnoff and disgrace to women
especially. It may seem the producers don't want interracial dating to occur on the show as in no black bachelorette with (dating) white bachelors or black bachelors with (dating) white bachelorettes.
A suggestion to the producers, if you want your ratings to go through the roof. Have a different race each season of bachelor and bachelorette ( meaning everyone black) on each show as you currently do presently only caucasians. Your ratings would surpass all the ratings you've had in the past combined. "Guys you're missing out"
