Is 'The Bachelor' Racist?

ABC production companies Warner Horizon Television, Next Entertainment, and NZK Productions are facing a major lawsuit alleging racial discrimination. Two African-American men, aspiring NFL player Christopher Johnson and friend Nathaniel Claybrooks, auditioned for "The Bachelor" in Nashville and claim they weren't given a fair shot. They say one producer asked them what they were doing there, and never called back.

Executive producer Mike Fleiss, who is also being sued, has already been accused of discrimination, mostly based on the show's lack of diversity. He once told Entertainment Weekly, "I think Ashley [Hebert] is 1/16th Cherokee Indian, but I cannot confirm. But that is my suspicion! We really tried, but sometimes we feel guilty of tokenism ... We always want to cast for ethnic diversity, it's just that for whatever reason, they don’t come forward. I wish they would." Do you think this new lawsuit is evidence of racial bias on "The Bachelor"?

Not on purpose. I'd like to think the other races are self-respecting enough to stay away from this show. Call me racist.

Would a sane, self-respecting person really; want to join that show?

It is so ridiculous and shallow, the producers are probably making-do with whoever signs-up for it.

Hold on - I have seen African American men on the Bachelorette. I am sure of it. I have also seen African American women on The Bachelor. But here's the thing about being THE Bachelorette or THE Bachelor. You are not the one being chosen - you are doing the choosing. And the person cast in this role is in a "starring role" capacity which means this person has to be able to carry this television show - has to be good at speaking and to some degree acting, and they have to be good at doing it in front of a camera. All that has to be taken into consideration. Maybe the guys who signed up weren't good at carrying a whole show - maybe that's the reason they weren't chosen. It did say they signed up for THE Bachelor, which means they would be carrying the show and doing a lot of talking and acting. I don't think it was racist - I think they just didn't have what it takes to carry a television show for whatever reason. Acting is a talent that they very well might not have had.

Are black magazines and black pageants racist?

I'll say it: get a black bachelor and many white women who signed up will say 'no'.

How could anyone want to subject themselves to something like the "Bachelor" 90% of them are phony people to begin with just looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Well I guess from someone who does not look at the reality of the show might.
So why do I not think this is a racial issue? THe bachelor looks for a specific type of person. You have to have the right looks (good profile, phyically fit looking, strong jawbone, ect...) , a certain amount of confidence that appears when you look at the camera. That is why so few get on the show. It does not matter if your white, black, or hispanic. If you don't have the "right look" you will not get the interview.

Look, Black Entertainment Television is overtly a network that promotes a "blacks only" format. They can have a black entertainment network without any labels and if there were a "whites only" network that overtly excludes non whites or advertises it's for white people, we would call the white network racist but not the black network. There are several networks, like Black Starz, that promote a black entertainment format but the programming often has a token black person in it you would notice... if they air programming where the only reason they add it is there's a black person somewhere in the film then isn't that racist... token black programming is, by definition, racist.

If these people only choose white participants, then it doesn't have to be racist... you must prove they purposely excluded black people. But then, if the woman being swooned is a white woman who isn't interested in black men, wouldn't you choose white bachelors?

Remember the Dating Game? What if you had a white woman as the contestant and her three choices were all black when she had no interest in black men? Many would call her racist if she didn't accept the man who won. But if you had the same scenario with a black woman who had a choice of three white men when she doesn't like white men, we would n...

Times are changing but the problem isn't with white people anymore as the problem is political in nature as most who would consider the issue with the Bachelor racist will be leftwing in their political views... and they'll be divided as some on the left will say this is racist... others on the left will say it's not agreeing that if it's ok to have blacks only programming them what's the harm of a whites only program as long as it does not purposely exclude non blacks where clearly it should be integrated.

Why not just ask the producers to create a Black Bachelor program to air on BET... wouldn't that be the smart way to address anyone who thinks this is racist?

take your BET, BTNC, Black only Schools, Affirmative action and shove up your ass if you have a problem with it. there is enough outwardly blatent "black only" programs out there as it is. get over it.
Besides, they want people with personality, not attitudes...those dudes may not have made the cut here, but they can try for some other reality show that requires bad attitudes like Jersey Shore (another predominately white show).
You should see how they do some game shows...they look for folks that are strange and/or disfunctional. Maybe these brothas were just too prim and proper for this show. it totally depends on what the producers want and I am sure color is not the issue.
But wait, there are a lot of folks that can't stand a black man with a white women....especially Black women...they hate that. perhaps the producers wanted avoid the issues that may arise regarding interracial relationships.
too much is going on behind the scenes to figure this one out.

At first wasn't to sure of your comment but as I read I pretty much agree. For the record I am Black and don't cater to the African American term, any way this poster is pretty much spot on show producers cater to the bottom line, MONEY and more MONEY. If a stereotype sells thats what they use. As well as what makes their sponsors happy. While their maybe some black women that watch the show, I doubt a large amount of BLack men and teen males do (no to males in general I think), so the show will cater to mostly the demographic that watch it for the most part.

thanks, I am glad you actually took the time to read it. and you really seemed to get my point.
About African American....i had a buddy, who was black, go to Djibuti (sp?),Africa in the 90's, he decided to travel while there....he found out quick that you don't call yourself african american in front of black africans...he never told me exactly why as he was not 100% sure himself...but he postulated via rumor while there that it was becuase when blacks had the opportunity to return to the motherland for free in the 1800's, they didn't. personally, i think home is where you hang your hat.....and I have been in japan as a permanent resident since 2001 (altogether being in Japan about 17-18 years).

A message like that could only be believed by a total dumbass. It is a competition process. And I do believe that it is possible that some of the people involved in these shows get so caught up in the drama that they start to imagine they have romantic feelings. I suspect the people involved in these shows have a lot of contact and conversations and interaction that the public never sees - no one could get so caught up in something unless they had a lot of "off camera" interaction. Point is, as soon as the competition is over, where did the love go?

And on a side note, is love not sometimes a competition process in our own lives? Have you not ever felt competitive for the attention of someone of the opposite sex? I certainly have. And I am a fierce competitor. :-)

Don't get me wrong - I don't think this show works, and I think it is ridiculous not to mention scripted and directed. Anyone who thinks it's not is ... well, let's be nice and say naive.

Your use of the term "competition process" got me thinking because I truly have felt very competitive for the attention of certain men when I was dating. I don't think I could ever say the things the people on those shows say or do what they do in front of a camera. I think that is exactly why they keep the alcohol flowing - it helps them forget about the cameras and loosen up.

You make good points but then again imagine the psychological damage caused to the ones rejected? Not to mention ridicule from others in public and among neighbours? That sort of embarassment has created suicides, and there's documented proof of that.
  • fcombs Mel 2012/04/27 20:10:43
    fcombs
These people are not in high school. They are grown ups who have no doubt dealt with rejection before. They also know full well how the process works and what they are getting into when they sign up. They have watched the show - they see the rejections, the fighting, the in house gossip - the whole thing. They bring in people with strong and dominating and obnoxious personalities on purpose to create a "show." These shows have been on for a number of seasons, and I have yet to hear of a suicide among the competitors. If anything, when they leave the show they enjoy a little bit of "fame" back in their home towns. I don't think they are damaged at all - they know exactly what is going to happen. They might be surprised that the bad stuff happens to them, but just like the love affairs end soon after leaving the show, I suspect the "trauma" for the rejects ends soon after leaving the show, too.
  • Mel fcombs 2012/04/28 01:30:48
