Is 'Teen Mom' to Blame for Making Teen Pregnancy Trendy?

Earlier this week, we told you about a high school in Memphis that reportedly has about 90 teen pregnancies or new moms on its campus. Now, reality star Kim Kardashian is speaking out against what she believes to be a negative influence on potential teen mothers: MTV's "Teen Mom."

Kardashian wrote about the issue on her Celebuzz blog on Wednesday, pointing out the show turns teen moms into superstars by putting them on television and magazine covers, and creates the impression that getting pregnant that young is the cool thing to do.

"It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls," Kardashian wrote. "The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!"

"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood, who was recently accused of domestic violence after repeatedly attacking her boyfriend on the show, disagrees.

Portwood told E! News, "Last time I checked, Kim Kardashian had a sex tape floating around on the Internet and I'm pretty sure she made a lot of money off of it ... There's actually a study that shows since the original '16 and Pregnant' aired, the number of teen pregnancies have gone down."

Decent point, Amber. Whose side are you on?

Hold the phone -- Kim Kardashian said something sensible?! Wowza! hold phone kim kardashian wowza shocked emoticon

It's always argued that the media influences girls to "be rail thin" or "anorexic," right? So why shouldn't it be argued, rather well actually, that seeing a bunch of girls who went out and got knocked up, only to become famous, makes the idea seem cool to some girls?

Most of the time, you see girls who are pregnant in high school made the butt of cruel rumours or whispered about in the halls when they pass by -- but these girls received fame instead. And realistically, most people wouldn't mind being famous and "known," especially teenage girls.

Not every person is smart enough to realise that by becoming pregnant at such a young age, they permanently change their own lives. Not every person realises that the baby they have will not be a doll they can just set aside or pawn off on their parents (though, alas, some parents do let this happen).

Some may just believe that by becoming pregnant, MTV will swoop down upon their house, armed with legions of reporters and big bucks, to make them, their baby daddy, and their baby stars.

It's not the sole cause of teen pregnancy, but it is definitely romanticizing the concept, which is most definitely not a good thing.

I'm sorry Kim is right! We women tend to follow celebrities that are featured on tv and in mags. IF younger generations are seeing "Teen Moms" on mags that's coming across as yeah you can get pregnant and you'll be famous you'll be loved by everyone you'll get everything you've ever dreamed of. And that's wrong! Now the whole Kim sex tape that was something that wasn't meant to happen! The tape was made but it wasn't meant for the eye of the public so that's not Kim's fault! 16 and pregnant and Teen Mom are shows that were meant to show younger generations that being a teenage mom is not easy! But because the media took it to the next level it's backfiring!

A lot of the times though the girls don't choose to be on the cover of a magazine. It's the paparazzi's fault for making up stories about these girls and celebrities in general.A lot of celebrities get caught doing normal stuff and the magazine turns it into something else.

You have a point. After I posted this I've been reading the mags and I do see that. I put myself in their shoes and basically what they are doing is what I'd normally do but because they are celebrities they make it seem so bad. For example the Demi Lovato situation. They were saying that she was doing drugs and so on because she actually SOUGHT help and checked herself into a clinic. You are right but still I think the show itself is a bad idea. And the whole Kim having a sex tape out there is not her fault!

I think it can be taken that way, but i think the propose of the show was to give light to how hard and complicated being a teen mom is.

I think that Teen Mom is a nice show that portrayed enviable lives of young teen parents (to-be). Some were pretty, stylish, fun, not shut-in nor too ghetto, goal oriented, with futures of careers and more relationships.

Farrah and Maci were good-looking, Maci's baby father was good-looking, family had money, European culture...--

**I'm not a parent, but those 2 had a better life than I did, as I grew up in the inner-city with a dysfunctional family, was depressed about limitations, and still did not want or have kids. ***

Are you saying that shows like this are ok as long as the people on them are good looking and lead "enviable lives"???
  • Darbé clapton... 2011/01/21 21:55:03
    Darbé
Well actually, show's like this ARE "OK" because it documents life's problems for underage pregnancies. NOBODY is forcing ANYONE to watch this show, therefore it is NOT mtv's job to air things that cover up what is actually happening, nor is it there job to tell a parent's kid what's wrong or right.
  • clapton... Darbé 2011/01/21 22:01:28
    claptonluvr
I absolutely agree.....but did you even read what I said? I wanted to know whether Lessie thinks the show is ok just because the people are good looking. I'm trying to find out what that has to do with anything.
  • Lessie clapton... 2011/01/22 21:34:15
    Lessie
    Yes.

Those mom's don't seem so bad--and it's time they got glorified and are able to feel special.
I like to see them smile and look fw to things like fun and proms--ho[pe they have a blast this spring.
  • clapton... Lessie 2011/01/24 19:58:54
    claptonluvr
The problem is that if we glorifu them we encourage more young girls to do the same things. Their biggest concern shouldn't be the prom.
  • Lessie clapton... 2011/01/25 16:18:26
    Lessie
I didn't say those mom's biggest concerns should be the prom, but to see that they still do things for their own life in addition to the kids and feel youthful and valuable--instead of the teen moms who feel worthless and give up.

A show has less influence on life decisions--the people who will have kids probably had the thought and circumstances to do it long before. I can't image those from affluent backgrounds with college in their future etc. changing their mind to have a kid b/c of the show. *Also I think some of those teen moms were accidentally pregnant and did not plan it.

The show will encourage those to keep their spirits up and see someone like themselves like a celeb.
  • clapton... Lessie 2011/01/25 21:59:07
    claptonluvr
I think you're right to a certain extent. Those who get into this situation probably would have done so with or without the show, but I just fear that it is promoting something it shouldn't be. I hope that they show the difficulties of being a teen mom and how emotionally, financially and mentally draining it can be.
  • Lessie clapton... 2011/01/26 15:50:35
    Lessie
yeah, they didn't even do a lot of photos or reality coverage on teen-mom celebs like Jamie Lynn-Spears, nor on notable's family members like Bristol.

I guess seeing already celebs like the Supermodels and actresses when they're pregnant is better as they have earned and established themselves first, compared to idolizing those who have not.
  • clapton... Lessie 2011/01/27 21:23:38
    claptonluvr
I guess so. But I hope they don't try to make it seem like the ideal situation for teens of any background.

this show was not to blame because there were stupid girls having sex all through high school and who didn't think about what could happen. they got pregnant, and i bet some of their daughters did the same thing. the show is just idolizing teen pregnancy for those who like to sleep around, but hopefully the smart girls will take it as a warning.

NO, teach them the Truth. Celibate women, Nuns, shakers, maiden ladies, have a mere 7% cancer
93% cancer goes to active and married (Mare-Raid) Over-use and contamination of reproductive organs nipples and breasts. Birth control=animal vivisections, agonizing pain for small dogs and cats who have needles and hoses impaled into their wombs and organs. They cry out in agony and heartbroken trust of man. Since you DO reap what you sow (clone back) YOU end up with rotting organs on a death bed. It's too dang bad if male=lame doesn't like it. It's time to stop playing into male *breeding frenzy and LIVE...His-Tour-wrecked-a-me.... by overuse of womb/organs

YOU ARE RIGHT I've worked with women and teens all my life, high fashion NY and victims advocate. Most teen girls today are far too smart to waste their only youth. These sharp young gals are volunteers while they work jobs to put themselves through college. Women are interpreted as "weak" BY the weak
Most of history women have been interpreted by males who were thrill-killing their way through the centuries, from church to state. The male "interpretation" of women is ALL male *breeding frenzy. The
male dream; keep um' barefoot, pregnant and silent (Billions $$ for sports "No funds" for schools)

Accidents happen and the only way to stop teens from having sex is to lock them away in a tower somewhere. Shows like Teen Mom show what happens when a girl does get pregnant in their teens and shows how some people cope with it. While I do agree that these girls are celebrated and that is not right I do not believe the show needs to be taken off the air.
