Is Rock and Roll losing it's cool factor?

It seems to me that over the last decade, rock music has faded progressively into the background while hip hop and gimmicky alternative sub-genres have muscled their way onto the pop scene. Mainstay bands of the late 90s and early 2000s such as Shinedown, 3 Doors Down, and Tool have not been replaced on the charts by similar representation and instead have been phased out by acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, or Katie Perry for mainstream attention.
Music seems to be shifting from an expression of the soul into something that requires heavy doses of alcohol to really enjoy. Every genre of music has a place and it's own purpose but it seems to me that no one cares much about lyrics at this point and would rather see a big light show or listen to something that they can rave to.
Obviously there is an ebb and flow to musical interest and a shift will come again within the next five years but will we see the meat and potatoes style rock bands with an explosive lead vocalist, Slash incarnate on the lead guitar, and a drummer that makes normally sane human beings want to mosh actually become relevant again? It's hard to see it looking at high school kids. They are the people who drive sales and I don't see very many Chevelle fans on their way to study hall.
