Is New York City the Capital of Country Music?

When you think of New York City, what images come to mind? I'm guessing most people don't pair NYC with cowboy hats, pickup trucks and BBQ stains on white t-shirts -- but the times, they are a-changin'.

A Nielsen/SoundScan report revealed that as of last year, New York City has the highest country music sales, beating out Nashville by 20 percent. In fact, Nashville, which many would expect to be the country music capital of America, ranked sixth in sales... even Los Angeles sold more! What do you think: Is NYC the new capital of country music?

NYDAILYNEWS.COM reports:
Perception: New Yorkers don't cotton to country music. Reality: So-called city slickers buy more country albums than any other town in America. Yes, you read that right.

But there are some good ol boys from New York. Some are just drug store cowboys.....ya know, the type that buys boots, hats, and a truck, and presets most of thier radio stations to country music. But then there are those who actually work with livestock and ranch. Thems the good ol boys. They live the country life style, and personify all that is Down home corn fed country. It's all attitude, and every breath they give stands for something.

NYC may have more country music sales, and why shouldn't they? NYC's population has
more people scampering around than some entire states. But the Capital of Country Music? Give me a break! It's always been, and always will be the South, mainly Nashville,
Tenn. The only guys wearing Cowboy hats in NYC is the IMan, and that goon in the White, weathered briefs, singing. Next thing we're going to see in NYC, are a bunch of
    "Karn Ball" Randy Travis wannabees.

It just happens to be the most populous city, one would expect it to lead in sales. Just as it probably leads in all other genres.

Population size + sales records are congruous with each other, it doesn't take a genius to know that the more people there are in an area, the more likely an item will be bought simply based on the amount of people / products available. You could try and say that more New Yorkers bought a pizza than people in Florida. Or more New Yorkers bought hoodies than people in North Dakota. It's a math thing, not a "New York is turning to country music!" thing.

Yes NY city is full of "Redneck wantabees"...
Rock is gone to history, Rap is an abomination to music, and nobody is making that much pop music or other types of modern categories of music, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, Really?

Classical is always been around but not that popular since the renaissance. Ha…. Lol.
I would have never believed NY City would out buy country music over the other states, but there is more population (12 mil) in just the city than any of the popular country music states.

I still listen to Classic Rock and there are people discovering Classic Rock.
I am from New York City and I was born and raised there before moving to Florida. To tell the truth, I don't blame them for turning to country music although I am a not a fan of country music. I hate most of today's Pop and Rap music and it lacks creativity and quality. That is why I stopped listening to Rap and Pop music.
P.S. NYC is full of redneck wannabes. I know because I am from there.

I have seen some redneck wannabes in New York though and I just hate looking at it though.
Not everyone in New York is a redneck wannabe. Just some of them are and I hate that.

it's kind of a yes and no answer, the population of NY is so big you really can't get a fair and accurate percent from them.

Take the population into account. If they average the sales by the number of people, the results will be different.

A quick check of sales per capita will reveal that New York doesn't come anywhere near Nashville. Not to mention Nashville is where the majority of country artists record. You don't go to NY if you want to make it as a country artist. Nor do you feel a country vibe everywhere you go in the city. New York is the capital of country music just about as much as Nashville is the capital of techno.
