Is New York City the Capital of Country Music?

When you think of New York City, what images come to mind? I'm guessing most people don't pair NYC with cowboy hats, pickup trucks and BBQ stains on white t-shirts -- but the times, they are a-changin'.

A Nielsen/SoundScan report revealed that as of last year, New York City has the highest country music sales, beating out Nashville by 20 percent. In fact, Nashville, which many would expect to be the country music capital of America, ranked sixth in sales... even Los Angeles sold more! What do you think: Is NYC the new capital of country music?

NYDAILYNEWS.COM reports:
Perception: New Yorkers don't cotton to country music. Reality: So-called city slickers buy more country albums than any other town in America. Yes, you read that right.

MOST New Yorkers (that live in Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc) I know (and I'm originally from Brooklyn, NY) do NOT like Country Music and in fact HATE it with a passion. (I might be wrong but from what I've been informed, it appears that Long Island is MORE Country Music friendly, unless of Course you go upstate NY where you are bound to find some Country Music listeners.) I am one of the RARE New Yorkers that is COMPLETELY obsessed with Country Music. Country Music is my FAVORITE genre of genre of Music. (I also have a STRONG appreciation for Bluegrass Music.) I have as much of a Northern Accent as George Strait and Neal McCoy (2 of my FAVORITE Country Music Singers) has a Southern Accent. I did get many of my NY Buddies into Country Music though. The ONLY Country Music that's starting to get a bit popular in NY City is the Country-Pop Stuff such as Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, etc but in my humble opinion they RARELY sound Country and they sound MORE like Pop Music. I betcha half of NY probably wouldn't even know they were considered Country Stars. I miss the Country Music that sounded like Country. 90's Country Music is my personal FAVORITE! :)

I'm from Brooklyn, NY now living in Texas and I felt JUST as deprived as you did that there were NO more Country Music Stations in NY City. (There are Country Stations once you leave the City.) If you own an iPhone or an Android Phone and have a Jack built in your car then you can play the Internet Country Stations through your car speakers. If you have an old car that has a tape deck you can buy a special casette tape that plugs into your iPhone and pop tape that has a special wire connected to your car tape deck. Another option is to buy an fm or wireless fm modulator i think it's called and then you can play your music. :)

P.S. I GREATLY miss Brooklyn, NY though. Texas is FAR more affordable livingwise on the otherhand. :)

    Thanks! :)

I've been to Houston, TX once. So far the friendliest place that I feel I've been to in TX is Glen-Rose, TX. They have the Dinosaur Museum there but the MAIN Attraction worth visiting there is the Safari. The people there were REAL friendly. :)

I EVEN own a Cowboy Hat and Boots and wore it to Billy Bobs Texas a couple of times. :)

    YeeHaaw! ;-D

Do they even have a country music station? I know the Country Music Association has been working that market like crazy. It's no Capitol though.

Hell no! Nashville, TN is the capital of country music. The best country artists record their music in Nashville, no matter where it is being sold. A better gauge would be where all the wanna be country artists go to be discovered! It ain't NY City.

You hear it all the time Nashville, Tennesee the home of country music. The Grand Old Opry is there and everything. The reason that New york out sells Nashville is their population. And most of them are not native NewYorkers th ey are probably transplants.
