However, it may be found that he was a victim of a rogue individual other and what is looked upon as an ambush marketing leak of photos which were scheduled to be released on August 16th, after the official Olympic final date according to Rule 40.

Rule 40 ~ a regulation introduced by the International Olympic Committee earlier this year specifies that no athlete was able to participate in non-Olympic marketing campaigns from July 18 to August 15, 2012.

The Official Rule States ~ A competitor or a team may lose the benefit of any ranking obtained in relation to other events at the Olympic Games at which he or it was disqualified or excluded, in such case the medals and diplomas won shall be returned to the IOC.

Micheal Phelps ads for Louis Vuitton were unveiled during the time and date, according to Rule 40, he was unable to participate in non-Olympic marketing. Two photo ads was leaked on Twitter and other various online sites. As a lesser punishment, Phelps may be fined unless the investigation fines the photos were intentionally leaked with his knowledge.

I find it very hard to believe that he would be involved in an act that would cause him to lose any of his medals - he worked so hard for those medals and they must mean the world to him - I think someone leaked the photos without his consent

With the leak he stands to lose not only his medal, but also the record of most medals by an Olympian, I doubt that he'd risk that to model for Louis Vuitton, he sent out the photos on Twitter after the end date, so I think that he can't be held to it.

The IOC will arrive at its decision regardless of how we feel. A boycott is not the answer, but a boycott of participating advertisers might be.

Why jeopardize the rest of his life?

If he agreed to have them released at a certain time and they leaked out beforehand, that's not his fault.

He may not be smart enough to know what he is allowed to do or not. It is his responsibility to know and not makes excuses

What difference does it make. He it did and and took the chance anything else is a risk that he choose. If it was wrong to do the timing is secondary

if he made the commercials for the product and they were on hold until after the olympics were over ,and someone leaked them ,how is that a risk he took?he wouldn't have control over someone else's actions.

Maybe he should not have made them until after. That is the risk. He and most people should know by now the danger of leaks and stupidity on social media. Why did he make them before hand?

perhaps thats when they were scheduled to be made. shrugs! i agree that there are all sorts of leaks etc these days. perhaps he was too trusting or too busy to think about it. but why should he be punished if he had no hand in it?

Yes he had a hand in it. He could have waited to after the Olympics and this would never have been an issue. What his is to important or famous to wait? Bull. What has he been doing since that would have devastated his life. Would it have interrupted his other endorsements.

He did it and it leaked. He took a chance that it wouldn't and it did. He deserves to be held accountable for it

They wanted him to do it before because he does the shoot in one of the pictures with the woman who was at that time currently holding the record for most Olympic medals, they were confident he would break her record, which of course he did. All athletes were made well aware of Rule 40, in fact many Olympians were angry and protesting, saying that it should go away or they should be paid to participate in the Games, because the ban can severely cut in on their income, and they can't work normal jobs since they must train so much.

In case you never heard the Olympics are supposed to be for amateur athletes. Not paid professionals. If they want an income let them get jobs

If the pics were taken to be released after the allotted time, then he didn't do anything wrong. Someone leaked the photos on twitter. Innocent until proven guilty......
