Is M.I.A. Still "Ghetto" in Her New Beverly Hills Home?

SodaHead Music 2010/05/28 23:53:53
She thinks so. When a New York Times reporter called her credibility into question by bringing up her new house in Brentwood, a rich white neighborhood near Beverly Hills, M.I.A. was so upset that she released the reporter's number over Twitter, claiming it was her own to get fans to call it.

M.I.A. is known for her radical political views and activism regarding third-world countries. However, the article, written by Lynn Hirschberg, called M.I.A.'s sincerity into question, noting how she "moved from the political to the personal and back again" before being "interrupted by a waiter, who offered her a variety of rolls," and spoke about wanting to an outsider while "eating a truffle-flavored French fry."

Hirschberg also quoted a Sri Lankan spokesperson named Ahilan Kadirgamar who claimed that M.I.A. "only made the situation worse," referring to the recently-ended Tamil war, which M.I.A. actively protested against.

The article doesn't do much to cover up its bias, but does Hirschberg have a point?

MIA was never ghetto. She may have been a migrant, but she was a well connected and well educated. St Martins art school and living with Elastica's singer before even touching a microphone... come on.

And for what it's worth, it is not possible to buy in that part of Beverley Hills on the album sales she's done (fiance's father happens to have a $1.6 billion fortune).

yeh she had me fooled at first too...

MIA will always be dope to me :) Her mind is right, no matter where she goes or lives. Street cred? Do gangsta rappers lose that because they don't want to shop at the dollar store no more? These haters are trippin'! MIA is legit 100%. Brentwood isn't all white anymore... good. Diversity is a good thing - Monoculture is boring as hell.

yes she is believe that...it's called the "prestige money pass" which is easier to get than than the ghetto pass, but M.I.A. watch out they still maynot invite you to their posh occasions, oh well that's life... but on the real you better not get like some other stars and 4get where you came from!* i just had a thought are black ppl afraid of where they come from ( i am not white) cause they always seem to go buy houses in the white hood...mmmmmmmmmmm?!

If she were running around behaving like Steve-O, then her cultural background may come into question. Sometimes, though, you're damned if you do & damned if you don't, so go for the pumpernickel roll to eat with your boiled goose, M. I. A., because you hustled that cash fair & square. http://bbs.chinadaily.com.cn/...

I don't understand this mindset. What do people want her to do, live in the ghetto for the rest of her life? Maybe she picked the neighborhood because, oh, I don't know, it's a nice place to live? Geez.

Basically put... she sold out. When a star moves from the streets to wealthy pomp living circumstances, the feeling is they sold out. What they have done, in effect, is proven that the very worst is true of impoverished or poor communities because she has the money to actually build herself a nice place in her own hood but instead abandoned it. Why? Some are very honest in stating they're likely to be killed or robbed on a regular basis if they remain where they grew up... some are more blunt stating where they came from, no one gave them anything and they basically have "escaped" the life they were once forced to live.

But then, they fake the street life deal throughout their career... and it is in fact fake when they live in a rich neighborhood and totally abandon that life other than play acting because it benefits their careers.

What makes this with MIA even more worth condemning are her political views because now she has the power to bring real, hands on change. It's like a black celeb who leaves where they grew up. They have the connections and the influence which aside from the money they have, gives them the ability to create real change back home for the people they grew up with... they simply don't do it or very rarely so.

You hear about these country singers who buy towns or who basically own the hometown where they grew up in. They invest in the towns but it's the people in them who choose their local leaders. When these local leaders do badly, it's the celeb who owns the city who gets blamed by many when often the investment by the celebs did bring positive change or helped a lot of people in need initially... then things go downhill.

It's kind of a no win situation if you do nothing or do too much but when you add in political views... then, you are yourself in the wrong if you do not practice what you preach. You cannot condemn others for doing nothing while depressed communities suffer when you have both the means and the resources to help them... but do nothing except blame and criticize others for not doing what you yourself won't.

Now that MIA has chosen a new path for herself, she either must change her entire life to what it has become... or remain true to her old life using her newfound wealth and influence to bring about the change she sings and preaches about or otherwise she's just another punk'a55 exploiter no different than the people she complains about regardless of where they may be in the world.

Haven't heard many of her songs, but if it's true that they're about things like third-world countries and such, isn't it a little strange that she's living in an awesome house in BH...?

If she comes "out of the maw of the third world", she should be comfortable in a normal-sized house in a normal neighborhood. Not in a huge, modern, expensive house like the ones in BH. She could then use the money she saved from not buying a huge house in BH to go towards the third world countries and people she comes from.

Her politics and music are poignant, and buying a house is better than hoarding the money. There's nothing wrong with circulating some of her fortune through real estate, and she doesn't have to live in a dangerous neighborhood to speak out against corruption. Hirschberg just sounds like a dick.

In my opinion I think this does call her so called street cred into question. Because here she is denouncing capitalism and the western world. Yet in the same token she choses to live in affluent and safe neighborhood. Rather then among the common folks.

Actually she isn't an american citizen. So to make such a blanket statement is definitely in poor taste on your part. Living here and owning a home here does not always mean you are a citizen. It is apparent she enjoys the amenities of what living here can offer a person.

Admittedly, I only know a few details about her. But, hypocrisy is not limited to the borders of the USA. It is every where in the world. Still, M.I.A. is a hypocrite for saying one thing and doing another. That is the definition of a hypocrite.
