MIA was never ghetto. She may have been a migrant, but she was a well connected and well educated. St Martins art school and living with Elastica's singer before even touching a microphone... come on.
And for what it's worth, it is not possible to buy in that part of Beverley Hills on the album sales she's done (fiance's father happens to have a $1.6 billion fortune).
yeh she had me fooled at first too...
Is M.I.A. Still "Ghetto" in Her New Beverly Hills Home?

She thinks so. When a New York Times reporter called her credibility into question by bringing up her new house in Brentwood, a rich white neighborhood near Beverly Hills, M.I.A. was so upset that she released the reporter's number over Twitter, claiming it was her own to get fans to call it.
M.I.A. is known for her radical political views and activism regarding third-world countries. However, the article, written by Lynn Hirschberg, called M.I.A.'s sincerity into question, noting how she "moved from the political to the personal and back again" before being "interrupted by a waiter, who offered her a variety of rolls," and spoke about wanting to an outsider while "eating a truffle-flavored French fry."
Hirschberg also quoted a Sri Lankan spokesperson named Ahilan Kadirgamar who claimed that M.I.A. "only made the situation worse," referring to the recently-ended Tamil war, which M.I.A. actively protested against.
The article doesn't do much to cover up its bias, but does Hirschberg have a point?

Extreme sells, no matter who you are.
But then, they fake the street life deal throughout their career... and it is in fact fake when they live in a rich neighborhood and totally abandon that life other than play acting because it benefits their careers.
What makes this with MIA even more worth condemning are her political views because now she has the power to bring real, hands on change. It's like a black celeb who leaves where they grew up. They have the connections and the influence which aside from the money they have, gives them the ability to create real change back home for the people they grew up with... they simply don't do it or very rarely so.

You hear about these country singers who buy towns or who basically own the hometown where they grew up in. They invest in the towns but it's the people in them who choose their local leaders. When these local leaders do badly, it's the celeb who owns the city who gets blamed by many when often the investment by the celebs did bring positive change or helped a lot of people in need initially... then things go downhill.
It's kind of a no win situation if you do nothing or do too much but when you add in political views... then, you are yourself in the wrong if you do not practice what you preach. You cannot condemn others for doing nothing while depressed communities suffer when you have both the means and the resources to help them... but do nothing except blame and criticize others for not doing what you yourself won't.
Now that MIA has chosen a new path for herself, she either must change her entire life to what it has become... or remain true to her old life using her newfound wealth and influence to bring about the change she sings and preaches about or otherwise she's just another punk'a55 exploiter no different than the people she complains about regardless of where they may be in the world.
