Is Justin Bieber Ruining Steampunk?

Some might argue that Justin Bieber is ruining Christmas with his hideous sweaters and Santa kid swagger, but the Biebs' new video for "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is offending onlookers of a very different sort. According to The Washington Post, Bieber is being accused of slaughtering the steampunk subculture by incorporating elements of the aesthetic into the video.

Simply put, steampunk is a sci-fi genre combining aesthetic elements of the Victorian and Edwardian eras in futuristic contexts. Airships, top hats, and automatons are common elements of the subculture, though it's more complicated than that. Examples of the steampunk aesthetic include the works of Jules Verne (especially "A Journey to the Center of the Earth"), Disney's "Treasure Planet," and the "Bioshock" video game series.

If Jar Jar didn't ruin space operas, and the Lawnmower Man didn't ruin cyberpunk, JB can't ruin steampunk.

Yea, but JarJar Binks nearly ruined a perfectly cool Star Wars movie for everybody. Can we buy a dvd w/o him in it? We have to ask. Editing is so well done now, it could happen.

Steampunk (which finally has a name, but has been around a long time in literature and imagination) can survive Justin's 15 minutes.

I sincerely doubt that he has the power or influence to ruin anything... he may piggyback on various trends and cultural influences, but that's as far as it can go. He's no stylemaker.

Alright, you've made an assertion - now show some evidence that isn't subjective to back it up. If you can't - keep quiet. It's called put up or shut up.
