Some might argue that
Justin Bieber is ruining Christmas with his hideous sweaters and Santa kid swagger, but the Biebs'
new video for "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is offending onlookers of a very different sort. According to The Washington Post, Bieber is being accused of slaughtering the steampunk subculture by incorporating elements of the aesthetic into the video.
Simply put, steampunk is a sci-fi genre combining aesthetic elements of the Victorian and Edwardian eras in futuristic contexts. Airships, top hats, and automatons are common elements of the subculture, though it's more complicated than that. Examples of the steampunk aesthetic include the works of Jules Verne (especially "A Journey to the Center of the Earth"), Disney's "Treasure Planet," and the "Bioshock" video game series.
