Is Hollywood Releasing Too Many Remakes?

Hollywood seems intent on not just coming up with new ideas, but reusing and rehashing old ones. In other words: Remakes. We've seen a ton of them over the years and it seems like they're just getting started. On the television front, TNT aired the remake of the old hit show Dallas, which started strong, but dropped in ratings after a few episodes. Of course, the fad of remaking doesn't end in TV Land.

Films of the past are getting remakes and reboots as well, including Superman, Ghostbusters, Total Recall, and RoboCop. Some have already had reboots, including The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man (which was released a few weeks ago and has already made $140 million). In fact, there's even plans to release remakes of films that were solid, not great, and some that were just not very good.

Those films include Judge Dredd, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four--and they didn't exactly hit or exceed expectations at the box office the first time around. If films aren't getting remade, they're getting sequels like Men in Black and Ice Age. We all love movies, but there may be too many of the same ideas being recycled. Is Hollywood's obsession with remaking a sign of laziness or just a new presentation of past stories to a new generation?

I hear they are making another Carrie? Superman & Total Recall I will l be passing on too and I cannot take another Fantastic Four origin. With so many stories that DC & Marvel have, why we get the origin stories over and over again is lost on me.

There is seriously a lack of creativity and imagination within Hollywood. I don't mind sequels, but even they are getting lame. However, I enjoy the comedy spins they put in "tv show to movie" productions... like Brady Bunch and Dark Shadows. I love to laugh hard. I look for new stories and I do like the different twists in old fables and stories hidden within history.

Same with TV.... as a kid I loved Battlestar Galactica..... as an adult, I asked myself "what is this sh*t?" when I sat down to watch the remake. How can you just change character genders and think the whole point of the story won't be affected?

But some of them are actually good. I think it's possible to make a good reboot if you put a little thought into it.

I like a DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE and NEW LOOK and since come of the REMAKES they have made advances in VIDEO TECHNOLOGIES and he such.. I love the new take and different take on some of the OLD SCI FI/ ADVENTURES..THEY FOR THE MOST PART STAY CLOSE TO THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT, some deviate though, but I like the stories with a different view...

ALTHOUGH, I am not happy some of these COMMIE WOOD PROPAGANDISTS are staring in these REMAKES, I would like to see FRESHER TALENT, NEWER TALENT, etc...

New ideas are rare (and good ideas are rarer) I think Hollywood rehashes alot of older works because creativity is dwindling. Time for a fresh batch of younger directors.

I wouldn't say it's a sign of laziness because they're working hard at fooling the average person while getting their message across to some. You should all know who really runs Hollywood... If you have a brain... look at the ?Total Recall? movie cover in one of these opinions, the symbolism is there.

Every once in awhile a remake maybe warranted but they remake alot of crap or they make alot of crap that pales in comparison to the original. . 2

They're just remaking the wrong stuff. No one likes remakes of GOOD movies. I'd like to see a remake of Earth Girls are Easy :)

Hollywood has been putting out lousy actors and lousy new movies. Producers keep adding too many sequels to original movies, which by the third one is not worth paying one dollar to see. Hollywood has taken great original movies shown on television updating them with new actors. Cable tv is loaded with junk. Hollywood must be making money. If they were losing money I'm sure this would not be going on. Yet millions of people go to the movies to watch and pay for Hollywood's budget garbage movies. Hollywood must be catering to a very young generation who never saw much older better quality movies. As viewers we have to ban this garbage by not watching them. Don't pay to go see these movies. Television program ratings once mattered. Has paying for cable tv destroyed this option.? We have to pay each month no matter what they show. Do you realize we slowly were forced into paying cable companies or get lousy reception. I remember this starting in 1970's.

Once in awhile a remake can be a real treat, but Hollywood's golden years are likely over as they go to the remake well far, far too often and respond with acting pool that as become diluted with many shallow people and poluted with wanabees who are only faximile imitation jackasses who think foolishness is the flavor of entertainment everyone loves. And I'm not sorry Ashton!

Most remakes of the past few decades require no real talent, only clever computer animation. I will say that the craft begun by Walt Disney has evolved into something incredible and has produced a number of amazing features. Of course there is Dreamworks who I believe is responsible for Wallace and Gromet. Excellent!

I agree with you. Yet Hollywood must be making money off their junk. Consumers are letting them get away with this.

Well here's my thought's on this matter. Either people can evolve through art and awareness or we can stick to mediocrity. Safe movies like well you know(remakes and such) crap that will make money. This sounds a bit like selling out. A movie does'nt have to have amazing special effects, superhero's that everyone has heard of, or copy from one another cause it works, and sells. Artist should create from their mind' heart and gut. Not look at what's selling right now and follow suit.
  • strawberry Patrick 2012/07/16 05:38:54

Great points! Also as consumers Hollywood depends on our money. Consumers are paying Hollywood for the garbage they produce. Often special effects are an over kill to hide any quality. I believe parents have to stop the superhero cult brainwashed into their children's minds. Look at the non creative toys sold in stores.?

As long as Hollywood is making money they won't stop. It is up to us consumers to not buy Hollywood's cheap junk. Also we now pay for cable each month which shows more one star movies, or "Pay for View" to watch Hollywood's mostly new budget junk movies. With all the cable stations I only watch a few anyway. If we don't buy from a cable company we get bad tv reception.
