The federal budget crisis in Washington known as the "fiscal cliff" has an estimated 400,000 long-term jobless Californians on the edge. A 41/2 -year-old program of emergency federal jobless assistance, which provides many of the state's unemployed up to $450 a week in benefits, is scheduled to expire Dec. 29 -- unless Congress and President Obama agree to keep it going.

Nationwide, about 2 million people face a cutoff in unemployment benefits, estimated to cost $30 billion in the coming year. An additional 1 million jobless workers are expected to lose state benefits by March.

What part of broke does CA not get? Their state is broke and can't afford more unemployment, their jobs are leaving because they can't afford more unemployment and taxes not to mention Obamacare on top of it, and what jobs they have illegals are doing. Got to love a state that screws their people then waits to get screwed by the federal government. Do they know it is their state and what jobs are left that has to pay for that unemployment not the feds? How about they suck it up, after all they wanted to save the minnows at the cost of jobs, save the illegals from being deported, and over tax their companies until they packed up and leave so now they need to pay the price for their own stupidity. Kind of what the feds want to do now by raising the taxes on the rich who happen to be the business owners of America.

Time to roll off the cliff! Californians deserve what they get. I live in California, but work for a company out of Missouri. Who wants to start a business in a State like California? No rational person does. We are now officially the highest taxed State.

The economy and technology are in disagreement, and have been for a long while. The economy 'wants' there to be a lot of jobs so as many people as possible can be a wage slave, but technology wants to develop and introduce ways to improve everyone's lives.

In the Netherlands we have a saying that goes something like this: If two dogs are fighting over a bone, the third will take it and run along. The corporations are a bit like the third dog. What they did is welcome a part of the technology, but instead of using it to make everyone's lives better, they use it to make more profit.

And that is where unemployment comes in. The corporations, whose only goal is to make as much profit as possible (keep in mind, corporations are NOT people) use it to replace employees for cheap machines that don't require health and safety ensurances and such. So for the employed part of the population life doesn't get any more comfertable, and the unemployed part of the population keeps growing larger.

The least the president and Congress can do is keep the benefits going, rather than abandoning the many victims of our sick society.

Higher taxes makes "fewer" jobs. It has been shown that eliminating the "temporary" unemployment assistance gives enough incentive for people to find work. It may not be the "same" work they had, however, and that is why they are not accepting new employment in preference to a check.

I can only find part-time work and it's not in the field I have an associates degree in. I may have a job but employment helps make up the difference. I apply everywhere even in other states and I don't get anywhere! My part-time job only gives me three and a half six hour days a week on a $11.00 an hour. I didn't vote for Obama knowing he wouldn't do anything to help our economy. I figured if Romney were elected, being a good business person, he might have gotten the economy started again with more jobs.

Obama wants to go over the cliff, he doubled the tax increases he wanted during the campaign, said they cut enough and proposed more stimulus for his union buddies. He thinks that if we go over the cliff he can blame republicans. He can't fix anything using his left wing methods, and since his blame Bush card expired, he needs someone new to blame.

The Obama Administration still hasn't explaned how higher tax rates are going to create jobs.
The same Bush tax rates we have now are the same rates that generated hisoric levels of revenue in 2006 and 2007, so it is obvious that low tax rates are the reason for the high deficit that we currently have. In 2007, the Treasury Dept collected the highest amount of tax revenue in history, and the same Bush tax rates were in place.

Click here http://www.taxpolicycenter.or... and scroll down to the Bush budget years of 2001 through 2009. Note the 9/11/01 attack destroyed over $2 Trillion in GDP in 2002 & part of 2003, but as the tax rate cuts were implimented, unemployment declined to a low of 4.6% by 2006-07 and actual tax revenue reached a
    high of $ $2.568 Trillion.

The impass is over Obama demanding to increase the tax rate on those that pay the most taxes already. The top 10% pay over 60% of all tax revenue collected while just under 50% have a net tax rate of Zero after claiming all deductions available to them.

Today, we have far to few people PULLING the wagon and TO MANY people RIDING in the wagon.

What's needed is tax policies that do not impose any penalty on success... or failure... what's needed is to abolish the entire 72,000 page tax code and replace it with the FairTax, a 130 page bill currently in congress that has the support of almost SEVEN DOZEN Bipartisan cosponsors. HR-25/S-13 would completely untax the poor, while gleening revenue via a national sales tax on new goods and services.

Warren Buffet would pay exactly the same tax for his Big Mac & fries as would his secretary, as would YOU and as I would pay and we all would have all sales taxes up to the poverty level refunded to us each month, thereby making THIS sales tax a progressive and fair tax.

Best of all, it would untax the estimated $9 TRILLION dollars in overseas investment capital that has been held outside of the U.S. so as to avoid the double taxation that our current system imposes on repatriated profits. If Obama thought his $1 Trillion in stimulus was good, imagine what $9 Trillion could do for business start-ups and job creation.

Support the congresscritters that support the FairTax!

I do have a part-time job but not enough to support my family. There isn't a job out there, that I can find, that gives more than 20 hours a week. With Obamacare businesses don't want to hire anyone over 29 hours as the company would have to provide benefits.

We lived with the normal tax rates BBTTC (before Bush temporary tax cuts) and we can do it again. Maybe the Republicans will agree to kick the can down the road for three months - they are good at doing that. A reduction in taxes for income under $250,000 and other corrections can be made after January.

That is an easy enough problem to mitigate. Pass a Layoff Tax on employers who dump employees as ObamaCare is put into play. The aforementioned hospital can either keep the employees or be SURTAXED to cover their unemployment, food stamps, and Medicaid.

We've given everything demanded by Wall Street and the bourgeoisie for the past 30 years. Time for Obama to shut down that racket! The days where excess profit margins were treated as sacrosanct should be repudiated! It would be one thing if the hospital could PROVE that it's already on the edge. These businesses have ample fat in their take.

The Trickle Down idea that income and wealth should be maximized at the top has got to be repudiated. Income to the hospital (or any other business) must be used to support the employees. NOT the CEO, his cronies, or the hedge funds that own stock in the corporation that owns the hospital.

"Wall Street" has nothing to do with it, except that those "too-big-to-fail" banks are just more corporate-welfare parasites--no better than the individual kind.

Pass that tax and watch hospitals simply close up shop just like Hostess. There isn't enough wealth in all the world to stuff the gaping maws of the parasites (both corporate and individual) who think they can use government to legitimize their self-serving thievery.
  • Jim fortyca... 2012/12/03 23:11:54
    Jim
If we had a real POTUS like FDR, he would ORDER the hospitals to stay open. That is an absolutely legitimate function of government in that case. There are plenty of laws and historical precedence to justify nationalizing hospitals for the sake of preserving civilization.

America ONCE had the world's finest health care system BEFORE 1973, when HMO's were created. Before HMO's, health care was regarded as a Public Benefit. HMO's brought the pernicious Business Model into health care! American health care, under the New Deal paradigm, was regulated with the Public Good in mind. We had many public hospitals and clinics in rural areas.

Financing served the needs of hospitals and clinics. HMO's turned health care on its head to become an engine of profit for predatory capitalism.

As for the gaping maw of debt, it is ALL illegitimate and based on toxic derivatives that are nominally priced in the QUADRILLIONS. This is very easy to solve. Repeal the legalization of derivatives and reinstate the New Deal prohibition of them. Commence triage and order their destruction by diktat, starting with the most toxic variations i.e. Structured Investment Vehicles. Mass arrest of banksters, their enforcers, and all others to preempt another JFK assassination / Reagan coup d'etat attempt.

There is NO PEACEFUL and orderly way out of this. Unfortunately, Obama is no FDR.

While I sympathize with your Occupy sensibilities with respect to the government-connected criminal financial cartel, your post also contemplates doing violence to non-criminals (FDR-style).

Using force to punish criminals cannot be compared with the illegitimate enslavement of innocent people who just happen to provide a service that you value.
  • Jim fortyca... 2012/12/04 00:02:00 (edited)

Such force is not applied to the non-management employees. When you are a CEO, that gives you an abnormal power over many who depend on you. What a CEO and Board of Directors does is far and above what the doctors, nurses, etc. are responsible for.

Corporations are creations of the state and have been given FAR TOO MUCH power and lack of oversight for too long. It is MORALLY CORRECT for the government to dictate to the CEO, the Board, and management to keep the hospital open, in times of national distress. Believe me, the employees will be happy to hear that their jobs will be saved!

Just because certain people do something that is technically "legal" does not removed them from being rewarded with whatever Justice will force them back into doing what is right. When people of great power do things that are destructive to the social well-being, then they are CRIMINALS, regardless of how you define it.

BTW, I've believed in this long before Occupy came along! They were a feckless bunch of posers who were all too easily infiltrated and accomplished nothing.

Just because the only reasonable structure for a business within the current legal and political framework is corporate, doesn't make the organizers of the business your slaves.

I am not defending the state-privileged fiction of corporate personhood. But the CEO you want to treat like a criminal slave hasn't done anything to deserve the violence you want to do to them. What do you propose to do to owners of businesses from whom you want to steal who close up shop? Are you going to send your thugs to round them up and put them in gulags? Have your scumbag Wall Street controlled "government" take over said businesses--without the knowledge to run them effectively?

Your world is that of the gulag archipelago. Thank Providence that no such world can persist for very long before dissolving in the ichor of it's own selfish, violent ignorance.

What's sad is there seems to be too many Americans who voted for the politicians who favor commuistic ideas. We're in for the long haul since Obama was re-elected and I think it is only going to get worse before it gets better, if at all.
