As has been said before, Heath's portrayal of the Joker made this movie what it is. This isn't hype over his death, this is simply appreciation of an actor's art, his ability to transform himself into another persona for the benefit of the film and his audience. If you've ever seen the movie Unbreakable with Bruce Willis, you may remember a statement the "villain" of the movie makes. A hero isn't a hero without a villain, and a villain cannot be complete without his antithesis, a hero to combat him. This holds true in these newest Batman movies to the "n"th degree.
Batman begins would not have been the spectacular film that it was without both an incredible new take on portraying the Batman character as well as villains to compliment this new, TRUER side of Batman. Christian Bale found the darker Batman that many die hard fans knew all along should be portrayed on the bigscreen, but without an equally sinister portrayal of the villain in that movie, Bale would not have been able to make the "dark" Batman believable. Continuing into The Dark Knight, Bale needed another sinister villain. One darker and broodier than even Batman Begins. Heath gave him this villain, this epitomy perfectly portrayed of true evil, evil without any desire for personal gain. Evil in its purest form, its goal ...''

Heath gave him this villain, this epitomy perfectly portrayed of true evil, evil without any desire for personal gain. Evil in its purest form, its goal to bring society down to our most basic, primal instincts. Heath's portrayal of The Joker is the ONLY reason that Christian Bale was able to bring to the screen a further insight into the turmoil that is being The Dark Knight. These two complimented each other on screen so fully, so incredibly, that I fear we may never see another Batman movie equal in caliber. If the series stopped now with just Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, we would have two amazing portrayals of the characters we've all wanted to see for so long. I wait in trepidation to see if they can ever find another villain to be the next counterpart to the Batman we now know in these movies.
Does Heath deserve an Oscar? Absolutely. He gave himself so fully to his character, realizing a role in which the Joker was as he always should have been. Not a happy-go-lucky killer and thief, but a truly tormented, twisted, and sick villain. His performance bested that of every other actor I've seen on screen for the past 12 months and then some. I hope the Oscars will recognize this and award him post-mortem with what he deserves.
