Is GQ Trying to Be Offensive?

Hitting newsstands this week, GQ released “The 100 Sexiest Women of the Millennium” issue with Beyonce on the cover, fresh off her impressive Super Bowl performance. And while some people are offended merely by the concept of a sexiest anything list, the men’s magazine took it one step further and categorized some of the women in what many are calling a racist context.

A few of the categories in question include “Hottest Indian Chick” (Freida Pinto), “Hottest Pregnant Sri Lankan” (M.I.A) and “Hottest Chinese Chick” (Zhang Ziyi). Sure, saying someone is a sexy Indian woman might not be offensive in and of itself, but opponents are pointing to the random nature of the call-outs as the issue. To them the fact that every woman is not categorized by ethnicity makes those titles problematic.

freida pinto

Ruth C. White, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Social at Seattle University says, "If the magazine were saying, 'These are all the beautiful women from every country in the world', that would be a bit different… But by calling out certain women's ethnicity and not others, what they're implying is that these women are not beautiful simply because they're beautiful; they're only attractive within the context of their own ethnicity.”

But are people like Ms. White reading too much into this? Isn’t GQ just trying to sell magazines? What do you think? Is GQ trying to be offensive?

As long as it does not offend muslims it's OK. If they had "sexiest woman in a burqa" as a category then there would be deadly riots lasting several weeks.

Believe it or not, just because someone somewhere finds something offensive doesn't mean that it is offensive. Of course, that's besides the question, which is, was GQ "trying" to be offensive. Well since I am, like so many others, capable of telepathically reading GQ's collective minds (i.e. of their staff involved in the issue), I can confidently state, they were not "trying" to be offensive. However, that doesn't mean their thoughts were 100% legal either. I have picked up indications that it did cross at least some of the editors' minds just briefly (0.3 seconds on average) that it was possible some groups could be offended by what they were thinking of doing, before they proceeded to publish it. Thus the GQ editors were not specifically "trying to not" be offensive. While a lesser offense, this is a "shunnable" breach of the U.C. Consensus on Human Thought Guidelines document recently signed into effect.

A lot of parties out there are offended simply by the mere existance of GQ, and
other similar publications such as Maxim, and Esquire. And the most nortorious
of those being some of those radical feminist organizations out there. Their goals
seem to be the oppression and persecution of those who are unfortunate to be of
the male gender. While, there a few men out there who deserve exactly that, the
overwhelming majority of men out there, don't. Most men are good, and don't
deserve to be punished for the thoughtless acts of few bad men.

Racism will always be alive and well and so will comedy. If someone is using racism in a lighthearted way then let it be. There are plenty of malicious racist attacks that happen every day that should be the target of people who really want to change the world for the better. At least they pointed out MIA being Sri Lankan, if they called her Indian, then THAT would be racist...

Acknowledging someone's race does not a person racist. Saying the person is better or worse because of their race makes a person sexist. Saying "So-an-so is the hottest Indian woman" is not racist. Saying "Indian women are hotter than all other women" is racist.

No matter what you do or say, someone is bound to take offense. You can't please everyone. So; as long as you are okay with something, so be it. As long as no one is physically hurt, let it be.

No, they are attempting to do their job and "advertise" people with concern for their readers' minds-eyes' views. I have always tried to paint vivid pictures of people I am talking about and will often say something like, for instance, "an average-sized woman with the cutest British accent," or "a tall black woman with gorgeous long legs," or whatever. Same with men. It doesn't classify them as anything but who or what they are and what they may look like and is not intended to be offensive in any way, shape or form.

But I am very careful about when I go into any details like this just for the simple reason that people are so blasted touchy these days and you never know what kind of stupid reaction you're going to get anymore. The funny thing is there are a gazillion, oft-repeated, well-known racial epithets and character slurs that can be used to insult people, so if GQ wanted to be insulting they sure wouldn't have made up those innocuous adjectives that you list here. What the heck is wrong with a "hottest Indian chick" or whatever anyway? My only "question" about that would be, hey, India Indian or American Indian!

Not altogether racist. They are using nationalities not race in some cases. But are these same people being considered "sexy' in all general without the sub classification.

I think Russell Peters hit the nail on the head. The entire non-white world has convinced white people that they are somehow inherently racist. If I had a bunch of apples of mixed colors, what would be wrong with choosing the best looking red apple out of the bunch, and placing it next to the best looking green and yellow apples, and saying this is the best looking red apple? Would the apples be offended? I think not. When you can't even describe something by its most obvious and basic characteristics for fear of offending somebody, well, that is just absurd.

I don't think they are "trying to be offensive", but to many people they are.

But if we are supposedly PC, and age, sex, race, etc. are not to be deciding factors anywhere ...why are all asked on every item of paperwork you fill out for the government? The same government that tells us those statistics are not to be used.

The way things are going it will be a double offence to write Male Caucasian
Male - for feminists, & Caucasian - for all other races...
These are merely facts stated by the magazine, trying to sort in order to find more beauties is not racism.
Next thing it will be wrong to sort wrestlers for weight ranges...

    But they were nonetheless.

I'm surprised that people jumped all over racism and didn't say anything about the blatant sexism. A list of "beautiful women from around the world" is one thing, "hottest...chick" is another. If I were a pregnant Sri Lankan woman, I would NOT be happy at being called the "Hottest Pregnant Sri Lankan."

So, GQ, bring on the list of "Hottest... Hunks" from around the world. I want to see the "Hottest Afghani Hunk." Better yet, the "Hottest Taliban Hunk" (no racism there).

Racist...now did we wind up here? We are all the same race. Mankind. Human.

Different ethnicities are what make this world so interesting. When you say Chinese, Indian, etc....we automaticly associate that and can relate to a particular range of traits. It is the world as we live in it....embrace it!

It is not , really not , there are beautiful women in all countries i know it , i don't care to don't see women from my country and yes a country can has a special beauty for example Ireland . AH, GOOD GRIEF------let's be informed and concerned about something important and worthwhile-----like millions of unemployed, higher taxes, more and more debt, thousand of regulations, energy, the Middle East, North Korea, etc., etc.------let's take our Government to task (both parties) and stop being distracted by the silly. This is exactly what the government wants----it's being used to distract, divide and conquer.
