Is faking a handicap cool?

In Glee in 3D, a character is "special" because he's handicapped. Turns out he's not. Is this a bad message for small kids?

Inclusion is one thing. This is completely different. They got real gay kids, but they fake a real handicap. Why? Are they afraid handicapped kids couldn't perform?

I dont think they're afraid that a handicapped person couldnt perform, they very well could perform. But who knows maybe they were afraid they couldnt, but maybe they just couldn't find a handicapped kid that tried out for the roll. I'd be fine if they put a real handicapped child there and gave them a chance to perform, im sure theyd do great. But, i really dont think them faking it is offending anyone, is it?

But that entirely depends on who and why. I'm not handicapped, but if I was, I don't think I'd mind if people who weren't handicapped jumped in--unless they were deliberately trying to make fun of me. Take the Glee guy. I wouldn't mind him, since Glee isn't doing anything negative with him. Or, at least, I don't think they are (I don't watch, so).

Generally speaking, it is not only not cool, it is downright despicable.

Mind you, in my 4th year of Med School one of my classes required that I become a wheelchair user for a day -- twice. Very illuminating. But that was for educational purposes, and not for personal gain.

There are many legitimate reasons to imitate "special" situations. Faking it to fit in just strikes me as being horrible. It just strikes me that we have so much peer pressure in this country to set the bar as low as you possibly can so people feel good about themselves and then wonder why so many people wind up basically useless and our economy is going bankrupt trying to support them all.

As a "special" person myself, and the father of a "special" kid, this movie sold an awful message that handicaps are merely cosmetic devices used so people will think you're special. Not every cripple can just jump up and dance when they really want to. Do kids today think they HAVE to be gay to be special?
