Is Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" a rip off of Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly"?

fuzzy Ken "In G-d We Trust" 2008/12/11 14:46:37
I don't hear any similarities
WOW! They ARE alike!
Who cares? They're both good songs.

THEY DID NOT PLAGERIZE!!!!! something ive been trying to get out their like a cure for cancer.
My friend Roman Aponte has an uncle whos a producer for coldplay so me and him were given the awsome oppertunity to meet them on their 15 minutebreak when they were in the recording studio. I remember as clear as day, when they were going over their lyrics to a song I swear to god i heard "pillars of salt and pillars of sand."
    this was in FEBRUARY 2004!!
Satriani is a lying, greedy son of a bitch!

I don't care if they are alike, I heard plenty of songs that sounds the same as other song. Coldpay is one of my fav. groups and I just listened to "If I Could Fly", which is, by the way, a really good song.

Joe Satriani is a virtuoso on the electric guitar. When you have some time you might want to familiarize yourself with his music. It's good stuff!

Have to admit, that clip was pretty darn similar. But, doesn't this happen a lot? You hear something and maybe years later you create a song and perhaps those same sounds color your creation. Lots of songs sound similar. If the guys in Coldplay are smart, they will strike a deal with Satriani and let it go. Both songs are very cool sounding. Just that one has lyrics, which makes them different.

I hear a lot of songs that sound alike, but most I wouldn't be able to overlap without my head exploding from the inconsistencies. These two were tight.

Like both, but Joe's got the edge with me.

Music influences people to pull from their memories.....Maybe, members of Coldplay had heard Joe's tune.....wonder where Joe heard it?

Surfing w/.....was cool!.....Of course I was 18 in high school, and a little metal head at the time.....
Sounds like scratching on a chalkboard to me now.....Huh,......oh well......Coldplay should pay something all the same.....
    Joe could use a makeover.....

Bob & Tom compared them on the radio the other day, and then overlapped them to help compare. I gotta say, pretty damn close there! Altho Joe's is much harder.

It seems to be an obvious ripoff. However there is one glaring difference. Coldplay's LA LA tune is nauseatingly flaccid next to Satriani.

But the sound is very different, and I personally like Coldplay better. Nothing against Joe Satriani AT ALL, because he's amazing. Coldplay is just more my taste. :P

Cold Play totally ripped Joe Satriani off. I can hear it. Joe Satriani is one of the best guitar players in the world. Cold play is stupid for ripping him off, but I see why. Satriani is awesome, one of the greats of our time!! This is what happens is the music biz when you rip someones music off, Everyone finds out. Go Joe Go!!

Check out Joe here, He plays so beautiful, A true talented musician. I have loved his music for years!!

It's bad enough when music posers try to steal lyrics, but when you steal some guy's own melody he wrote with his own two hands, that is going too far don't you think?
