Is Classic Rock Making a Comeback?

The Billboard 200 album chart was top heavy with metal this last Wednesday, as Black Sabbath knocked Queen out of the top spot. Black Sabbath landed the No.1 spot with their new album 13. Is this a sign that the end of the world is near... or is classic rock actually making a comeback?

landed 1 spot album 13 sign world classic rock comeback

"The news is absolutely amazing - we couldn't have imagined this would happen," guitarist and founding member Tony Lommi said in a statement. Osbourne added, "To finally have our first No. 1 album in the U.S is another incredible milestone for Black Sabbath." However, this isn't just a big mile stone for the 43-year-old band
, but for their fans as well.

Despite the success, Black Sabbath is not in the clear, as disco duo Daft Punk and pop artist Justin Timberlake trail close behind. Will Black Sabbath be able to fight off the catchy tunes of their competitors with their electric-guitar solos and rebellious lyrics? What about when "Yeezus," better known as Kanye West, enters the battle?

Are classic rock fans right to let their hair down and enjoy their success, or have they taken one too many trips on the crazy train?

Classic rock never left. In spite of the age of many of the rockers they are far more talented than most of the "singers" of today.

Most teens I know listen to at least SOME classic rock. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Queen tend to be the popular ones amongst the people I interact with.

Although there has always been a large group of people listening to classic rock? So it never really left.

I just say yes because not because rock is coming back, where as it never left, but for the sole reason that people are waking up and listening to the good stuff. They may not be my favorite band, but the are more that one million times better that these teens that sound like girls ( you know who I'm talkin about) or these love sick puppies ( or what sounds like it) on the radio or what ever, it's truly a shame that nit more epic rock bands are being recognized for what they truly are and how great they are. Damn that was long

I know more people that are listening to the music of the 60s-70s than ever before. The songs made some sense back then. Today's music is just a lot of yelling and screaming with cursing.

Btw, I have the first Black Sabbath album made but, by far, I think Queen is more talented. :-)

It's a shame that radio stations are playing less classic rock because the advertisers feel the listeners are getting old to support the advertisers on the radio.

It's not just Sabbath. Deep Purple & Megadeth have released new albums. Led Zeppelin are getting back together. Metallica & Def Leppard have new albums in the works. Alice Cooper is headlining a few festivals in the states. Hard rock & heavy metal are once again showing the world what real music is about. And I'm pretty sure that this is just the beginning.

Led Zeppelin was truly my favorite (besides the Beatles and Rolling Stones). I had 4 of LZ's albums BUT my son, at age 10, decided he liked LZ and wore the albums out, besides blowing my speakers (went through 4 sets of those). My son is now 41 and still enjoys listening to LZ and I'm a lot older and wish I still had a stereo and my LZ albums :-).

I certainly hope so. I love classic rock. If I were to list every solitary one of my
favorite classic rock artists, the completed list would resemble something like a
shopping list for a large ranching family.

Definitely. Classic anything is great but Classic Rock is so moving and motivational and just makes you either mellow or energetic. In almost every movie or show nowadays, all you hear are classics.

Black Sabbath is the founder of metal. They will always generate interest but I personally have no interest in "classic rock" anymore. Sick and tired of it. It's time for new bands and new styles. I grew up in the 70s & 80s listening to it all. New stuff for me please.
  • hasher Warfinge 2013/06/29 01:25:12

its because of classic rock that the new bands are getting their start. all that crappy hip hop and top 40 stuff sucks!!!
  • Warfinge hasher 2013/06/29 12:19:48

I consider that pop and not really my thing. I listen to metal fairly exclusively and have been watching the fossils of metal turning out uninspired dross for the last 15 years. I like some new stuff like Batillus, Nails, Clutch etc. And yes the music I love now is built on the foundation of the likes of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden. But....I may give proper respect to those old bands but like Metallica, if you suck in your old age, you won't be getting my money. Metallica has aged into quite the disappointment for me. I suppose a starving, up and coming garage band has more creativity than a group of hipster millionaires.

    metallica is dead
