Is Acting Stupid? (Jennifer Lawrence Thinks So)

Jennifer Lawrence may be a big movie star, but she recently told Vanity Fair that acting is “stupid.” The star of “The Hunger Games” claims in the February issue of the magazine that doctors and firemen who save lives are doing the really important work and that her job as an actress is insignificant. She claims it’s easy to stay level-headed because, “I'm making movies. It's stupid."

And while Lawrence is thrilled to play Katniss in “The Hunger Games” and is busy making the sequel “Catching Fire,” she also told Vanity Fair about a big downside to being famous. She stated, “I call my mom sobbing all the time … dealing with the repercussions of having no more anonymity. You lose privacy.”

Of course, she might be in the spotlight more than she would like, but the silly little job she’s doing will most likely earn her an Oscar nod this year for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook.” And while it may not be as important as the work done by doctors or firemen, she does entertain and improve people's lives indirectly. Kudos, J-Law!

She might think so, but storytelling is one of the rituals that brings a culture together, and acting is a very powerful type of storytelling.

I can appreciate the talent of actors/actresses as well as any TALENTED entertainer. I sure the hell can't sing, dance or act. I just don't see why they are idolized and placed on a pedestal to be worshipped.

She didn't say acting was stupid, she said it was stupid to treat actors as such important people, compared to other professions like doctors and firemen.

While there are performers whose talent at portraying characters in films, television and on stage that I greatly admire I can't understand why they are elevated to such mythical levels. In the grand scheme of things there are so many more ":ordinary" people that are truly deserving of the admiration bestowed upon these "Stars"

"Stupid" may be too harsh, but Ms. Lawrence's point about doctors and firemen is absolutely correct.

She seems down to earth and not afraid to be herself. FINALLY we have a decent role model for young girls. And at least give the whole part of that comment in the interview. She claims it's stupid because she's not saving a life or anything like that. I love Jennifer Lawrence and am glad she has her priorities in order.

Acting is not stupid. We all have God given talents..and I can honestly say when I see a classic like"Office Space...or the movies and music around the 80's and early 90's..I stilll laugh actors can use exipression to play multiple roles..that is good ones. Although the priorities of Hollywood are skewerd.they often will speak for human rights for all people in the 60's. They weren't just ttripping or stoned. With any talent..there is abuse in the power God gave you as an actor...denying His existence
And have gratitude. No one can make you believe in something free will our greatest gift. When I see the many programs Hollywood types have are sometimes so incredity beneficial. Like Jessica Seinfeld..she knew that the woman of LA needed newborn baby cloths, and car seats given freely for struggling couples. Beings lawyer sound or poor people. Even those people were using their time talent and treasure. as you find yourself you listen to the map of your life direction..every job is important as it feeds a family..provides the family bigger and better level s of living such as two cars. A mortgage..though wonderful to own

I don't think it's stupid. I love acting, and I love watching TV and movies. That said, I agree that doctors, firemen, et cetera are more important and should be making the big money.

I love acting. But die to what Jennifer Lawerence has said, It is true. Actors get paid millions of money for portraying a character per episode they do and it is ridiculous. But acting is a challenging job to get into like any other. But compared to meaningful jobs like Firefighters, Doctors, It is stupid.

Compared to professions like firefighting and doctors, like she compares it to, yes, it is kind of insignificant. But, it does entertain people and I think that that is also a good thing

its a career choice, its not nearly important as being a paramedic or the fire brigade but if EVERY career HAD to be beneficial to the state and its people, we'd be living in whats called A COMMUNE! (no offence to any russians/cubans who probably know the politics of this matter) anyway, jobs like this that let you make your own way in the world is what democracies were made for.

It's true that firemen and doctors do save lives, but it must be considered that actors in movies with lessons in them do noble jobs also in influencing society towards the right path. How often do you hear people pop movie quotes in dealing with this or that situation or in addressing something? I think back to the ancient plays of Greece, I suppose those were asinine moves, too. No, you must consider the content of the movie in which an actor takes place.
Fables, reader, are really comprised of actors, but lessons are learned from them. So should movies be. Plus, movies can help to ease tensions, help people connect and lead to good discussions and also cause people to question themselves, beliefs, and become better for it (again, I hearken back to Greek playwrights like Sophocles). Find a good movie that is actually worth something.

Good for her! I like how the headlines are so misleading, though. I believe her point is that the world (or at least the first world countries) tend to hold actors in such high regard, meanwhile there are people literally saving lives every single day, putting themselves in harm's way, getting paid next to nothing and dealing with tons of stress and guidelines while teaching our children, etc. I commend her for being so honest, which will definitely make me more open to watching her movies.

In the way she means, compared to Drs and such but, she should know entertainment also helps us get away from the grind for a while and that is good, just don't do junk movies with a lot of cussing and sleeping around.
