This could actually make me think twice about the death penalty. I have always thought that perpetrators of animal abuse/neglect, should be treated EXACTLY the way they treated an animal. They don't deserve any better.

If Polo Horses Were Poisoned, Perpetrator Deserves the Death Penalty
April 21, 2009 02:15 PM ET | Bonnie Erbe | Permanent Link | Print

By Bonnie Erbe, Thomas Jefferson Street blog.

It's not that I want to write about animal cruelty as often as I do. It's just that evidence of cruelty continues to abound. Whoever perpetrated this alleged crime should be punished severely:

At least 21 horses collapsed and died on Sunday as they were about to take part in a polo match in Florida, and investigators said on Monday that poison was the most likely cause of their deaths.

The horses, from the Venezuelan-based Lechuza Caracas team, were being unloaded in preparation for the United States Open polo championships in Wellington, Fla., when several of the animals inexplicably began to stumble and collapse. Many of the horses died at the scene as veterinarians tried to save them and spectators looked on. Others died at vet clinics or while en route to a local clinic.

Veterinarians who examined the animals said that it appeared that they had died from heart failure caused by a toxin of some sort. But the precise reasons for their deaths were not expected to be determined until Friday, when autopsies are conducted, said Peter Rizzo, the executive director of the U.S. Polo Association.

Is the death penalty appropriate for whoever did this (assuming it was intentional)? In my mind, yes it is. Many Americans believe that other animals have just as much "right" not to be slaughtered or abused as human animals have. If authorities find the person or persons who apparently poisoned these horses, that/those person(s) might get off with a stiff fine (no fine is stiff enough) and a few years in prison. Anyone sick enough to cause these innocent animals such a horrible death is sick enough to go after humans next. If that's not reason enough to protect people from the same fate, then what is?

Life in prison on a horse ranch where he has to pick up horse crap bare handed and feed and care for them. He may also be beaten by the horses owner if he does a bad job or lips off. He will be allowed to dine at the hogs trough.

I go along with that, but it will probably never pass. Animals get a bum deal when it comes to laws in this country.

I know! I wish in my lifetime they would change the laws so animal-abusers would get what they deserve, but so far it looks like a long shot!

You've probably heard today, also, but apparently the 21 horses were injected with Biodyl which is not legal in the U.S. (legal as far as selling/using/prescribing). It's a combo of 5 different ingredients. It apparently is used a lot in Europe for race horses. It is supposed to be a drug that helps race horses, show jumpers, etc., to recover more quickly from physical activity. It would have had to been tainted with too much selenium or something that made it fatally toxic to those poor horses.

my husband is in iraq and i live alone with my dogs...i simply can not imagine why someone would treat an animal in such a manner. they are not able to KNOW if someone is trying to harm them and can't fight back(especially in this situation).
i hope the courts put the person that caused this in horrible pain!!
    IMHO(in my human opinion)

Not so much. Animals are NOT humans.
They should be respected and not abused, but to equate them to humans is foolish and ignorant. You heard me, foolish and ignorant.

Kudos to you. The first step towards wisdom is realizing your ignorance.
But in all seriousness, how can you equate the two? I was always raised to believe that animals are sacred, but to confuse them with humans is sacrilege.

You answered your own question. You were brought up to know "animals are sacred--odd choice of words for the way you feel--but to confuse them with humans is sacrilege." For me, life is life--whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage.

Today we went to the park to have a picnic in honour of Earth Day. Whilst enjoying our company, one of our friends' dogs lunged and bit at my wife. For a split second I almost let my own dog off of her leash, so that she could fight on behalf of my wife, provide me the time to cross the distance and diffuse the situation. This is the behavior I advocate. Not poisoning animals. It is just a matter of survival.

I hope your wife is okay. That can be a frightening experience. I blame owners who do not control their dogs, and those who make their dogs aggressive in the first place.

As do I. She is fine, a level-headed individual to be sure. The dog was raised in a box, rescued and the owner is 'trying to socialize' her. I understand the issue, sympathize, my own dog is a rescue, but that doesn't reduce my conviction in the idea that I would readily sacrifice my favorite-dog-in-the-world for my wife or kids.

ME too! If I'm "ignorant' because of love for animals, then i will happily be that way rather than someone who obviously doesn't have a heart and doesn't realize that all life is precious!
