Ice-T Defends Right to Bear Arms After Colorado Shooting: Is He Right On or Way Off?

Rapper/actor Ice-T has taken a strong stance on last Friday's horrific "Batman" shooting in Aurora, Colo. Regarding the back-in-the-news debate on gun rights, he told Channel 4 London: "It’s legal in the United States. The right to bear arms is because that’s the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. It’s to protect yourself from the police."

"And do you see any link between that and this sort of instance?" the host asked the 54-year-old. "No. Not really," he replied. "If somebody wants to kill people, they don’t need a gun to do it."

"Makes it easier though, doesn’t it?" the host said. "Not really. You can strap explosives on your body. They do that all the time," Ice responded. He added, "the United States is based on guns. Like KRS said, you’ll never have justice on stolen land."

Ice later followed up on his comments on Twitter -- and he didn't back down one bit. "My comment on guns got a lot of press.. They call me ‘Gangster’ don’t forget ‘US Army Vet,'" he wrote. He added, "I love how people are soooo SHOCKED to hear something thought provoking said by a rapper.. Hip Hop has changed to POP .. Nobody says sh–." OK, he has a point there ... do you agree with Ice's stance on guns?

Pepper spray is the gift that keeps on giving. You get hit and it dries up and you think its over. Then you take a hot shower, open up your poors and it's like you just got sprayed again.

by all means bare arms to protect against an armed assailant or an intruder in ones home but the police really??? isn't the point of the police to protect the citizens.

the police do not protect anyone

Not really, particularly minorities and protesters, who frequently feel police brutality that goes completely without any form of redressment.

The police are supposed to protect the people, but they don't. They haven't for years.

Maybe if the law abiding gun toting citizens had been allowed to take their gun to the movies with them more innocents would still be alive. Banning guns will not keep crooks from getting them. Stop being stupid people. You want to be helpless in an emergency or dangerous situation? Fine. Don't buy a gun. But leave my damn weapons alone.

100% right on...except the last bit. It is not to protect you from the police, it's to protect you from criminals. That last bit was a bit too retarded for me to care for.

So, apart from the fact that Ice-T is a great guy (not a rap fan but I met him once), we should look at this from a different perspective. When there is an accident do we talk about banning planes or cars? When someone chokes on their food do we consider banning steak?

We have a second amendment to protect we the people from they the government. It isn't to hunt. And most criminals don't aquire guns legally, so how exactly is making the legal acquisition of firearms more difficult going to stop criminals(by definition law breakers) from getting weapons through illicit means?

I support the Second Amendment, and I think Ice-T is correct.

The thing is, no one expects a gun to be drawn in a movie theater, so who would bring their gun there, even if it was legal to carry a weapon into the cinema? And who would have had time to draw and fire back when they're trying to make sense of what's going on, protect the people around them, and get away? And who would risk shooting in such a dark, crowded, and panicked room?

The right to bare arms is a right that our founding fathers gave us on account of we needed to protect ourselves from all enemies. I am not about denying that right just change it to make assault weapons illegal, after all assault weapons are built to cause significant harm you know kill people.
  • Willy Robert ... 2012/07/26 04:04:29

And your so-called assault weapons would be the most important if we had to invoke the 2nd amendment.
