Rapper/actor Ice-T has taken a strong stance on last Friday's horrific "Batman" shooting in Aurora, Colo. Regarding the back-in-the-news debate on gun rights, he told Channel 4 London: "It’s legal in the United States. The right to bear arms is because that’s the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. It’s to protect yourself from the police."
"And do you see any link between that and this sort of instance?" the host asked the 54-year-old. "No. Not really," he replied. "If somebody wants to kill people, they don’t need a gun to do it."
"Makes it easier though, doesn’t it?" the host said. "Not really. You can strap explosives on your body. They do that all the time," Ice responded. He added, "the United States is based on guns. Like KRS said, you’ll never have justice on stolen land."
Ice later followed up on his comments on Twitter -- and he didn't back down one bit. "My comment on guns got a lot of press.. They call me ‘Gangster’ don’t forget ‘US Army Vet,'" he wrote. He added, "I love how people are soooo SHOCKED to hear something thought provoking said by a rapper.. Hip Hop has changed to POP .. Nobody says sh–." OK, he has a point there ... do you agree with Ice's stance on guns?

Mind you, I disagree when he says there's no link between the US gun culture and incidents like this. It's not just about the right to own guns, it's the perception that guns and violence are cool and/or fun and/or actually useful for fixing anything in today's society (especially on a global scale). People might not need a gun to kill people, but the way you justify owning a gun and the way you justify killing people sure do have a lot of similarities.
Did you read that part about more guns lowering crime rates from Wikipedia? Here's the full paragraph:
"The economist John Lott, in his book More Guns, Less Crime, states that laws which make it easier for law-abiding citizens to get a permit to carry a gun in public places, cause reductions in crime. Lott's results suggest that allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms deters crime because potential criminals do not know who may or may not be carrying a firearm. Lott's data came from the FBI's crime statistics from all 3,054 US counties. Lott's conclusions have been challenged by other researchers. A University of Pennsylvania study, for example, found that people who carry guns are 4.5 times likely to get shot than unarmed people."
So there's evidence both for and against what you've said there. Seems like while carrying a gun you makes you more able to defend yourself it also makes you more of a target.

If you take some time to look up this particular study the abstract will tell you that "Of 108 assessments of effects of various gun laws on types of violence, seven showed significant support for the hypothesis of gun-control efficacy; another 11 yielded partial support." This suggests to me that gun control can be effective if it's done right, however it rarely is done correctly.
Finally, try considering what you're suggesting in a larger context. Maybe in that one situation less people would die but then what would a society be like if it was common for any given movie theater to be filled with people carrying guns? Personally, that doesn't sound like a place where I would want to live. Fortunately, I'm Australian. When was the last time we had a tragedy like this? That would be back in 1996, right before the laws changed to no longer allow the carrying of guns for self-defence.
And where should NRA be so powereful anyway? I think we need to start having all elections voted by the people! There are a whole lot of people who belong to that nra but agree the assault weapons should be banned so this shows you just how powerful the "big wigs" are in that group. I have to wonder if something like what happened last week and it was someone they loved who got harmed if they would think a little differently. This "person" wasn't going after one or more specific person, he just didn't care!!
