Jere, my one and only shotgun is a 20g Remington 1100 Tactical with Choat extended tube mag and speedfeed pistol grip stock... It holds 8 rounds with one in the chamber. The first time I shot a 'sporting clay's event' I used my "riot gun" and fired all 8 rounds at the clay pieces as they broke into smaller and smaller parts... the range master was upset saying that I was only supposed to have two shells in the gun.... After his tyraid, I said... "Geez... I guess next you'll be telling me that you don't want me using buck shot either!"

A semi auto shotgun is the way to go. Actually double barreled are great fun. Over and under too. Depends on what you like. Not what anyone else says.

Actually, a good well balanced side-by-side double barrel is faster to the shoulder and surer with an accurate followup shot than a semi-auto ... generally speaking of course. For years, I've been looking for a reason to add a semi-auto shotgun, preferably a 12 gauge Benelli M1 to my little collection, but I keep seeing more and more fellow hunters with their semi-autos shoot more, and hit less. I knew one hunter who was a crack shot in our club go from a Remington 870 pump gun to a Remington 11-87 semi-auto, only to go back to the 870 because he went from hitting to missing. I guess if you get hardwired to one type of action, it is best to stick to it. Probably, the biggest mistake I made was passing up a circa-1938 A.H. Fox side by side field model with German Krupp steel barrels made just before World War II in like new condition for $450 in 1995. That'll never happen again.

I might add that action does not really matter for home defense. We use a 12 gauge Browning BPS pump gun with a 26" barrel loaded with DoD contract 00 buck shot which can be found a Wal-Mart or Sportsmans Guide for about $4 /box.

I did say depends on what you like. A LaFever Bros. Nitro Special. Side by side with worn bluing. Scraped up stock. A gun that was at my side for a long time. Mine not the fastest or the most expensive. Just the best gun ever made for me. So like I said it depends on what you like.

A general rule of hunting in the field is that when you hear one shot, its a kill, two shots are a sloppy kill, and multiple followup shots means somebody missed and there is no less game in the field now ... than there was a few seconds ago.

Chuckle----I'm assuming you don't shoot?? Perhaps you're not allowed to own guns in your country?? Shooting-----my sister is in the Shooter's Hall Of Fame in Ohio-----really. Shooting has nothing to do with "manhood." My daughter carries a .357 Lady Smith. Attacking her could be -----and probably would be----fatal. So, what country are you from???

WOW!! It's been so long since I fired a shotgun I wonder if I could hit what I was shooting at! Not so with my M1 however! We have a couple of great shooting ranges here in Maricopa County AZ. And I can still disassemble, clean and reassemble it in the dark! Who said military training doesn't have a place in the real world!!??

I have my old Henry Coach Gun with 00Buck close at hand. If??? I need to back that up I pick up my S&W; Model 29 in .44----first three are .44 Special next three 180gr jacketed hollow points. Used a shotgun during Nam with Buck. Then slugs. Up to 25-30yds it's fatal----a bit messy too. Often used an M14 with Sniper Scope. Hit what you shoot at, don't need to spray lead-----too many of our guys drained their M16. Problem then. I shoot trap and skeet, good practice-----try and break 100 straight in a match. Love the shotgun for home defense-----hard for someone to miss and it stops the intruder. Gave up on semi-autos----too much temptation to just spray lead and I like to keep my casings for reloading. Actually, I can shoot my Remington 870 Pump accurately faster than a semi-auto cycles----if you don't believe that??? come on down to our Gun Club and shoot doubles with me.

I believe it I use O/U Remington for skeet. S&W; 687 or Python 357's for bad guys, never had to YET, A 16Ga 870 for Pheasant, Remingto 30/06 for Deer.

Quite easy and a great hobby. Shoot a lot more too. I've been reloading for-----ah, nuts, a long time (50+years)and have a rather large room devoted to reloading. Buy a good press and it'll last ===well==== so far, forever. Although I have 6.

I've not had the pleasure of shooting a shotgun for sport...Only while in Viet Nam. The biggest drawback was that there was no way to reload quickly as there was with a magazine fed weapon. Would like to give sport shooting a try.
  • Dave 2012/05/28 19:35:07

If two don't get the job done, the third, fourth, or whatever are not going to help you.

My 9mm Glock 19, however, holds a lot more than that and can fire them VERY quickly.
